Hey dudes I am looking to upgrade me router but I am not sure about any good brands. I was thinking of getting the new N-wireless routers probably from Linksys. I am not going with D-Link anymore mine is being meh ATM.
Yeah that or maybe just get the Linksys WRT54G
Thanks dudes

If you go with an N router, make sure you're network adapter is N compatible as well, or you won't see any performance gain. Even then, it would just be a local network performance boost.
The WRT54G is treating me nicely, though I am going to put the DD-WRT firmware on it, for stabilities sake. Only had to reboot it once since I installed it about 2 months ago, and that reboot cleared up the problem (generally slow network speeds on one computer).

when looking at the linksys, make sure you know what WRT54 model you are getting as there are G, GS, GL models, all with different firmwares and amounts of memory. Some you can install DD-WRT on, some you can't, some you can depending on the version.....research!

Drayu is right, the newer ones have less onboard memory than the older ones. But they do have DD-WRT Lite (or something to that effect) for those models. Aren't missing many features, just the higher end stuff (VPN endpoint and such)

what does DD-WRT do exactly? I know it's a firmware but don't all routers have firmware already on them?

It is free firmware that has been modded to expand the capabilities of the router. Read up on it at:

Alfy I've researched and found that the WPNT834 seems to outperform all Linksys routers so far but I hear everyone tells me to avoid Netgear...

Netgear has been hit and miss for me. I used to work for a Wireless ISP and most of the stuff we'd install when the customer asked us to provide a router was Netgear. When they work, they do a bang up job. When they don't, it's bad....
Just speaking from my experience of course.

From my experiences, Netgear is horrible but that may be because they were older models.
Also, I tend to prefer the UI for Linksys routers (at the 192.168.X.X address) over other routers, Linksys seems to keep it more flexible than others.

this was true early on, especially with Dlink routers... my opinion (and it's just mine) is that Netgear has increased in quality while Linksys (since being acquired by Cisco) has gone down.
like everything else in life, it's about choices. make a choice, try it out... worst case is you take it back as a return.

I know, this is a 1 month bump.....BUT....I just purchased a DLink Dir-655 Gigabyte N Wireless Router. $129@BB. 4/5 stars on newegg (196 reviews) http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833127215&Tpk=DIR-655 . So far so good with this router! Fast, easy to use, and enjoying the transfer rate between two computers hard wired with gigabyte ports!
