RUNAWAY BRIDE, DEEP THROAT TO WED
Match Made in Publishing Heaven, Experts Say
Just days after they both inked big-money publishing deals for their memoirs, "Runaway Bride" Jennifer Wilbanks and "Deep Throat" W. Mark Felt announced today that they are engaged to be married.
News of the impending marriage, which many in the bookselling business are calling a match made in publishing heaven, was leaked yesterday to The Washington Post by Mr. Felt.
"When Jenny agreed to marry me, I had to get on the phone with Woodward and Bernstein," Mr. Felt said. "No way was I going to sit on this news for another thirty years."
Mr. Felt said that he and Ms. Wilbanks met by chance when they arrived at their literary agent's office at the same time last week to sign their multimillion-dollar publishing contracts.
"From the minute I saw her, I knew I wanted her to be Mrs. Throat," he said.
The marriage between the two headline-grabbing memoirists could create a perfect storm of publicity for their soon-to-be-published books, publishing insiders said.
"Having the man who brought down the Nixon administration marry the woman who fooled the country into thinking she was missing is every publisher's dream," said analyst Lars Drazin, who covers the publishing industry for Credit Suisse First Boston.
"The only potential pitfall is if Jennifer skips out on Deep Throat before they actually walk down the aisle," he added.
For his part, Mr. Felt said he is not concerned about such a development: "If Jennifer runs away from me, I'll leak it to the Post."
Elsewhere, the Pentagon said that military recruiting was down for the third straight month because potential recruits are running faster than the recruiters.
