Persephone
06-21-2005, 12:46 AM
I'm not sure if there is a post like this any where. I looked but I couldn't find one..so if there is..sorry. Nya! >^.^<!!!

Anyways what's the origins behind your gaming name?

Mine is...and no I didn't write it. Just copied and pasted off a site.

Read here if you're curious!
http://messagenet.com/myths/bios/persephone.html

Persephone was a lovely young goddess who lived in ancient Greece. Her mother, Demeter the earth goddess, made plants grow -- the grapes, the wheat, the trees -- all across the world.

One day, as Persephone played alone in a field of flowers, the ground opened with a rumble and out came a chariot drawn by dark horses. In it rode Hades, god of the Underworld. He captured Persephone and took her to the Underworld to be his wife.

As the earth closed up behind them, Persephone's belt fell to the earth. When she didn't come home, her mother, Demeter, searched everywhere for her. As months passed, Demeter grew so sad she forgot to make things grow. The warm, green earth turned brown and cold. Earth's first winter came.

One day a shepherd gave Demeter a belt he'd found in a meadow, near an opening to the Underworld. Demeter guessed what had happened. She went to Zeus, King of the Gods, and told him that if he didn't tell Hades to let Persephone go, the earth would stay brown, cold and lifeless forever.

Zeus agreed and told Hades he must free Persephone. Demeter went to fetch her, but quickly discovered something terrible had happened. Persephone had eaten a few pomegranate seeds while in the Underworld.

According to the law, if a person ate pomegranate seeds, she could not leave the Underworld.

Demeter refused to make anything grow, and so the gods made an arrangement: for every seed Persephone had eaten, she must spend one month a year below ground with Hades.

Demeter agreed. Persephone returned to the earth with her mother and Demeter's happiness returned. The earth flowered and grew warm again. The gentle months of spring and summer passed.

But then, because of the pomegranate seeds, Persephone had to visit Hades. Demeter grew sad without her daughter. Leaves fell from the trees. Another winter returned, cold and lifeless.

So according to the old storytellers of Greece, winter melts away as Demeter and Persephone run together in the meadows each spring -- when a happy mother once again sings the ancient song of life.

Edit: I guess some people may wonder why I just sent you links to the story of Persephone. When I was little I was just obsessed with reading..still am. I love to read. I got hooked on Greek Mythology and my favorite story was that of Persephone and Hades.

Everyone tends to think my name is derived from everyone's favorite sniping implement. Some have even dared to scorn me when I display any sort of ineptitude with it. However, contrary to popular belief, it has nothing to do with that. As some of you know, I am a band director. Before I was a band director, I marched in a group called the Madison Scouts Drum and Bugle Corps. For any of you that know anything about band, the Madison Scouts are one of the best marching ensembles in the world. When I was young, I shortened it to Mad5cout as a point of pride. It sort of has lingered because I believe it to have some sort of coolness to it. Screw all you that think it's dumb. :bonk:

NOt dumd MAdscout.

Mine is also not what one would think.

Atomic Bob came from the name of a habenero BBQ sause I marketing some time ago. Nothing to do with bombs.

I've told this story before, but pers (and others) haven't seen it so I'll go again.

Atomic Bob's BBQ was a little company I started back when I was winning cookoffs all the time. Well, I never really quit winning, I just quit entering. BUt, the sauce was great and the people in the sause business were very cool, so my partner and I launched our "business".

We got 2nd place at the National Fiery Foods Show in Albuquerque one year.

Margins were slim but we did manage to go about 3 years travelling around cooking and drinking and raising hell before we got tired of not getting rich. That was a lot of fun.

So that's the Atomic Bob's story.

I love dragons. hence, my name.
My old CS name was Ice Cream Toilet.
THAT name came about because I was tired of picking names that other people had already thought of.

Oi bob, any chance you could pack some of your BBQ sauce and mail it my way?

My name use to be "iCe)~RuiNeD" (With the D) and it was supposed to be a slurred version of: "Eyes just Ruined your shit" You can sorta' connect.

Also the ice came from my friends brother.

Rune came from my brother.

^ Two very cool people.

They use to play games together when me and my friend were younger always asking if we could play.. and we'd get the typical "no you're too young."

So. There it is.

MajorPayne
06-21-2005, 12:14 PM
My name comes from the cult classic movie by the same name. However, the two words have multiple meanings, you can think of it as Major Payne, as in a major pain in the ass, or Major Payne, as in a high ranking officer of pain and destruction! I like to use the latter.

ResJudicata
06-21-2005, 01:18 PM
Res Judicata is a legal term in latin

it means

: (rayz judy-cot-ah) n. Latin for "the thing has been judged," meaning the issue before the court has already been decided by another court, between the same parties. Therefore, the court will dismiss the case before it as being useless. Example: an Ohio court determines that John is the father of Betty's child. John cannot raise the issue again in another state. Sometimes called res adjudicata.

basically, if you got pwnd be me, your gonna get pwnd by me again..

Anyway, I had to come up with a username for my first bbs username, I picked Pep beause I was drinking dr. pepper and I tried other names close to that, but they were taken.

Fast forward about a year or two and a dude in teleconference (friend of mine now) started calling me p00p. zeros and all. He ended up getting all my friends to call me p00p and that's how p00p stuck.

Pimpdaddyp00p cause I'm pimp or something. :)

So The Name Monos, comes from the Did you know? section of the local newspaper in Saint Louis where i grew up. one day about 12-15 years ago i saw that Monos was the Greek God of Pain And Sarcasm and immediately identified with this since i tend to be a Sarcastic smart ass most of the time. started using it on all of the games that asked for a player name, Cyber Empires, Perfect General, ETC. and have used it almost exclusively since although i have used some others.

Hot Sack O' Nickels comes from 2 sources, first one of the many crappy updates from Valve cuased a name bug where some players would see the wrong name for other players in the list, i showed up as Hot Nickel which was i assume someone's way of professing their prowress with nickel plated pistols? and then the other half comes from inspiration from Phyx who sometimes plays as "Hot Johnson" so i twisted it to make it Hot Sack O' Nickels kinda the sack to compliment the Johnson, kindy goofy but what the hell i'm kinda goofy.

and lastly some movie references

Death to Smoochy (Death to Smoochy)

James Jesterson, and Forest Lawerenceton (dirty rotten Scoundrels)

Mr. Saigon
06-22-2005, 10:17 PM
I picked my name for Eve of Destruction (awesome Vietnam war mod for bf42). Anyway, it's a masculine version of the play name "Miss Saigon." I think I was watching family guy at the time cause I really didn't have any idea what the play was about. "La la la Miss Saigon.. miss saigon..."

Here's a synopsis of the play.

Set in 1975 during the final days of the American occupation of Saigon, Miss Saigon is an epic love story about the relationship between an American GI and a young Vietnamese woman.

Kim is working in a sleazy Saigon night club owned by a notorious wheeler-dealer known as 'The Engineer'. John, an American GI, buys his friend Chris the services of Kim for the night. That night will change their lives forever.

Three years later, the US Army has fled Saigon. Chris has returned to America and is now married to Ellen, an American women. He believes that Kim is dead. However Kim has left Saigon and is living in poverty with her three year old son, Tam in Bangkok. Chris finds out that Kim is alive and has bore him a son and so returns to Asia in search of Kim and Tam.

When Kim learns that Chris is in Bangkok with his new wife all her hopes to be reunited with him disappear. She is desperate for her son to have a future in America with his father and will make the ultimate sacrifice to achieve this.

Ahhh wow, my life story. Except it's 2005, I don't work in a sleazy night club, I'm not a prostitute, Chris is actually a hot chick, my name isn't Kim, I have no son, and I don't live in Bangkok.

Meh might as well jump on the wagon.

My name as some might know (Vash maybe) is from an anime series, as during high school it was a major interest. That has slacked a little now I guess, but anyways the main character was named Demon Eyes Kyo, he was supposedly a man who had fought at the Battle of Sekigahara, in 1600, in Japan. He had fought and killed over 1000 men during the battle, and was deemed the greatest swordsman in all the land, blah blah. Well after watching the series, it was apparent that he was a badass, and I've been using the name across serveral games for a couple years. If anyone played, or plays Warcraft anymore, doubt it lol, my personal favorite name on there was OzzBlessAmerica. Just a funny name, that I saw on a friend's ozzy T-shirt.

All leagues need a commishoner the NBA's David Stern. Their CBA is set to expire, and when everyone predicts that there will be a lockout, they get the deal done, being fair to both sides, and ahead of the deadline. Best commish in sports, IMO.

I wouldn't say this is necessarily the owners refusing to let the players play. Its the fact that neither side would give an inch on the issue of salary cap for far too long.

Oh yeah, and my name is sort of a combination of my 1st initial and my last name. One of my roomates in college had the same 1st inital, and similar last name. He was simply Jwolly. Our third roomate refered to us as JW1 and JW2, so I've been jwolly2 ever since.

((TNT((~*

I couldnt think of a creative name when i first played CS, so i just stuck with my first name, Kevin. Since i was supernoobish i could never get any kills except when throwing grenades. I always knew when to throw them and had pretty good aim in 1.6, even better wit the realistic physics in source. So since most of my kills were with grenades my friend Sc(+)pe-who actually bought HL/CS for me- dubbed me TNT and added the symbols around it to make it look like dynamite. :jester: :hump:

Gruthar
07-05-2005, 09:39 PM
If you played Fallout 2, you know where my name comes from. It's the first deathclaw you see in Vault 13 (hence the variation on my name, occasionally I use Gruthar of V13.) Anyway, if for some unfathomable reason you haven't played the Fallout series, Gruthar is a giant mutant lizard that leads a pack of similarly mutated lizards who were all genetically engineered to be sentient by a group called the Enclave. They all escaped, but are later tracked down and exterminated by the Enclave, save for one named Goris. When you go back to the Vault, you see a recording of Gruthar getting pwned by the game's end boss. One of many side stories in FO2, but I liked the name. Only one other person out there uses it, though I don't know if it's from the same source.

I was sitting at my computer...and I was like, "Hrm, I need a name for people online to call me, cause CODY just sounds weird."

So that's when I began thinking of what sounds cool, but has a few different meanings as well.

I thought of Orange, or BOOBIES!!!!! but both of those were pretty darned blandy...Then...out of the darkness of the stormy night...HARRISON FORD!!!! came and saved the day.

He said "Cody, I want you to have your character online be after an object in one of my BESTEST MOVIES OF ALL TIME" and I was like "K...but can I keep the whip?" and he smacked me with it and proceeded to make me a KEGGER.

So long story short, I dropped the Holy off of "Holy Grail" and tat's how you all know me today.

Ps. I'm really tired right now and no, Harrison ford did not make me a kegger...it was more like a JESUS TABLE...since he was a carpenter...and like that band died a while ago :'(

The Leviathon

quite hijacking you damn hockey lovers!

now then, my name, (lev-aye-ah-thon) which is correctly spelled leviathan
is referenced in a bunch of things, giant sub in total annihilation, skycrane helicopter in gta: san andreas, repeatedly by the games-workshop model people, and, im told, in some kid anime cartoon like digimon or pokemon or something. its also a book about economics written by Thomas Hobbes back in the day

all that is irrelevant, its original and therefore most relevant usage is from the bible, specifically psalms, job, and isaiah.

while the meaning of these passages has been interpreted in many different ways, there are some commonalities:

there is only 1 leviathan
it is a monstrous creature of the ocean
it is serpent like
it is too powerful for man to stop (god pwns him with a sword tho)

as for the o instead of the a, i cant remember if this is actually true or not, but i believe leviathon is an archaic and no longer used spelling, though it was once considered correct. i first started using the name with age of empires and later starcraft and such, where your name needed to be completely unique.

heres some other names ive used over my gaming tenure:

deadmeat
Hobbes the Destroyer
legionnaire
THE BLOODENING!!!
cracker jack
jack the cracker
jack in the bushes
doomsicle

enjoy! :)

DinkyPoopStick is from the Latin Dinkan Poopara Stickous, which according to the letteral translation means a small length of wood with crap. However many newer Greek historians are starting to argue that it was the name of a great warrior. Dinkus Pooparian Stickarous was Demigod renown for his ability to knife snipers and control a mystical “Gyrocopter (a great metal beast, that fly’s through the air with its wings flapping in a circular motion above its head)” to dominate the battlefield.

when i first started playing fps i went by either UnknownSoldier51 or UnknownWarrior51. Then one day for some reason i decided to look for names on the internet. i ended up on the Mr.Roger's Neighborhood website looking at characters and found Donkey Hodie. I thought the name was creative so i took it, and since the only pic of Donkey Hodie was in black and white i figured no one would recognize it.

i played with the name "wrEk" in all the tribes games. the name came from these silly little graphics i used to make with paint shop pro when i first started getting interested in art and design. i used to always put the word "wrek" in all off them, and i honestly cannot tell you why i did that.

a few other names came and went from the death of tribes 1 and on, as i tried playing other games... nothing more than temporary though.

then it came time to get me a damn domain. i wanted something unique, but easy to remember, as i was going to use it to publish portfolios of photography/design work. i spent a lot of time trying to come up with something.... anything... for a while i wanted to use "produkt" with a k, cause that's kooler. then one night i was having a converastion with then my good friend, now my girl friend/roommate about sadness and certain bodily feelings associated with it. we both made this immense connection on the fact that when we are upset, we find our arms to feel immensely heavy. i feel like they are falling to the ground constantly when upset, and so did she. so there is a lot of mushy crap that followed, but it birthed my name. "the weight of arms" i thought could mean a few things, other than what me and her originally connected on, including some kind of medieval thing that i always visualize when i think of it... so take out the spaces for internet usage, and to be kooler.

yeah.

Why the name LeakyNavel?

A while back my Mom told me about someone she knew as a kid that had a belly button that didn't heal properly and for a long time it dripped fluid. I laughed and said "They had a Leaky Navel!!" It sounded cool and I've used it ever sense.

LeakyNavel is really my alter ego. I used to play under LeakyNavel when I felf like starting trouble. I've played under the name Gun Man for years. Gun Man started about 10 years ago when I used to have a federal firearms license. I also worked construction word got around and ppl would come up to me and ask if I was The Gun Man?

Persephone was a lovely young goddess who lived in ancient (blah, blah, blah, blah).

I just figured you got from the 1970's version of a woman’s cell phone and misspelled it.

When I 1st started MMORPG I played UO and I was named Collin McNasty. Had a couple different versions like just Mcnasty, Lord Collin, Collin the Irish Mage, and Me Poppy. When I started playing other PRGs that required unique 1st names as you imagined Collin was usually taken and Me didn't meet most naming conventions. So in DAoC I had a Kobald Skald (1st lvl 50 kobby skald on server, many were made after me) named Letme SingASong. So when ever i would type something like "Letme pull that mob" I would type it like that, and still do out of habit sometimes. All of this has 0 to do with DinkyPoopStick BTW.

When I was in college (still during my DAoC days) I had to create an account for AOHell Instant Messanger (AIM) for my senior design class. My group wanted to use it to do some telecom work if we weren't all at school. Well all the usuals like Sean(real name), my lastname, and other were taken. I got tired of having to create TONs of differnt names for everything so I just took 3 random words and stuck them together. Low and behold DinkyPoopStick wasn't taken for AIM, or in DAoC, or in... well just about anything. So in all games after that I use DinkyPoopStick unless the game is strict on names(like SWG) then I just go with Dinky and some veriation of poopstick. IE I had a tamed Peko Peko in SWG named DinkyPekoStick.

In beta they let me keep DinkyPoopStick, so alot of people in beta commented on a 6 foot dancing wookie named DinkyPoopStick

matter fact when i went to EB to buy SWG the day it came out, I heard people in line in front of me talking about great names they saw, and 1 of them started talking about me

I took the moniker of Slappy because I was tired of seeing all the "intimidating" names in FPSs like killer3346, 0wnzUHard, NoobHunter, etc. C'mon folks, your talent is what matters, not your name.

So I thought, "What is the exact opposite of that? Something stupid and silly." Hence, Slappy. :D

The PS stands for PlanetSide. I was a game tester for that title and to designate the devs and testers as SOE folk, we stuck PS on the back of our avatar names. Just giving some love to my old game. :)

My son, who will be 6 in September, is still laughing hysterically over your name. He thinks "DinkyPoopStick" is the "funniest" name he's ever heard.

I actually died the other night a few times because I was laughing so hard that HE was laughing so hard. He'll be watching cartoons then come in the room and say "DinkyPoopStick" then run out. I think I'm going to have to break him of that habit before we go to the beach :)
