View Full Version : Possible WiH Tourney: formerly "CSS FF-ON dead??"
Crotch-Rot

I was looking at our CSS FF-ON server stats yesterday. In the past 2 months, there were 2 days where there were 4 people on. I haven't played CSS in a long time so I wanted to ask you guys if CSS fever has died down or if it's just that there's no one to play with at WiH. LMK.

i dont think CS:S fever died, ok the most of our CS:S players play TF2 now and the rest is playing on other servers because its not funny to play on a server with only 2 people on it,or wait forever that someone joins!!
i think only the GG server is low populated sometimes!!

I have uninstalled CS:S for a bit until my exams are over, but after that I was looking forward to playing some reg CS:S. Plus, the server is on the on the same one as the TS and some of the other mods. Since this does not cost any extra, is there any use in taking it down due to a little bit of inactivity?

I think I've abandoned CSS... It's kind of sad considering that's how I begin playing here, but TF2 is just blows it away in amusement, and I'd take Insurgency over CS any day. Gungame = evil

I was doing my usual monthly reviews of the servers and noticed it hasn't been used in a while. CSS have been an important part of WiH since the beginning. That's why I'm asking to find out the state of union sorta speak for CSS in light of recent mods such as Insurgency and TF2. There's no plan right now to take it down, at least not that I know of. :)

I'd be on it every minuted I could if it would populate. I could be in the server for 30 minutes and probably not see more than 4-6 people stay.
Everyone seems to wants to play D2/office 24/7 with a betting system.
Please don't follow that model, btw.

I no longer play CS:S. In fact, I have not been active on any WiH server for over a year. I keep up in the forums. I have been waiting for WiH to support a game I'm interested in. I'm sure it will happen sooner or later.
Perhaps there should be one CS:S server up that does a mod of the month kind of thing. That would open up room for another server for a different game maybe? COD4? Unreal Tournament 3? Something else that has system requirements a large portion of the community could meet? Maybe this could be polled?
I want to be involved in TF2 but have not the money to buy games.

West Coast US ftl...
Whenever I feel like jumping into some CSS our server is empty, so I play elsewhere.
I miss the old days when it was full 24/7. A big ,i,, to GW! (yes, I shall forever blame GW for the abandonment of CSS).
I haven't had a chance to play in a long while. :(
I think since TF2 came out, most of the HL2 community has been there, and occasionally on CSS:GG. I personally have been playing a lot of TF2, but I would like to get some games of either Css, or GG again. to be able to mix it up a little. My recommendation is if it doesn't cost us any thing more, leave it, otherwise, put it away for a month, until TF2 quites down.

I started school on top of work now so I have very little time to play, at least during the week. After a long hiatus I was very anxious to return to the good old days of WiH, only to find that people rarely (if ever) play here anymore. How on earth did we go from tournaments composed almost completely of regs to not being able to populate a server!?

But that's the way it is with all games eventually. They grow older and eventually get replaced, sometimes by their sequel. In the case of CSS FF-ON, GunGame took away a lot of its traffic and then TF2 really did a number on it. In fact you can look at the release date for TF2 and correlate it almost exactly with when both FF-ON and GunGame saw a decrease in traffic. TF2's a fun new game and there are only so many hours in the day so people have been choosing to play that (myself included) instead of CSS.
I still love CSS and in fact now that I don't play it much any more I find myself wanting to play vanilla instead of GunGame where as it used to be the other way around.
Speaking of which, who's up for a little CS:S FF-ON later tonight...say about 7:30 or 8:00?

How's that? I'd spark interest in CS:S again, I believe. As for setting it up and such, as long as people follow through and get matches scheduled, there shouldn't be a problem, as far as servers, aCe could throw up a practice server or two along with a tourny server, if WiH doesn't want to use the resources.

I think a WiH tourney would actually generate a lot of interest. The last one (which i think was nearly 2 years ago) was highly successful. I'm sure PNP could put enough guys together to defend their title, Team3's always up for a good war, TBS would definitely participate, W33T could participate in their first tourney and i'm sure LiT could be rekindled.
of course hosting a tourney is highly time consuming so it'll come down to whether the WiH admins and owners have the time and resources to make it possible. If they do that would be so cool.

Are any of the WIH owners willing to publicly comment on this?
Will WIH consider hosting a Counter-Strike: Source tournament?
If not, will WIH allow the tournament host(s) to advertise and organize a tournament through these forums, ala the <TI> tourny from last year?
Would WIH be more inclined to allow this if the host(s) were community members?

I can't count how many times 2 or 3 of us has jumped on the server(s) and gotten it near capacity in just a few minutes.
And I honestly can't count how many times I've sat on the server alone for over 20 minutes before getting fed up and leaving.
I'm not an owner, but if you want a tourney you need to show there is still community interest in the servers.
Community events like a WiH tourney might help that.
Or if the public was asked what would stimulate a rise in their interest. (e.g. removal of a few maps that DESTROY the server... like militia, havana, whatever) Err wait.. there were polls and discussions about this kind of stuff. But no changes or anything were made.
As for questioning the interest level of TBS, we make up about 40% of the friggin server the few times it does fill up.
And Winter has a point. The community that responded was all for it (including admins like Kegg n Prowler) but we have yet to hear from the owners if it is a possibility. Any input, be it positive or negative, from them would be greatly appreciated so we can get started here or on another server if necessary.

I really dont know what the animosity is for. I mean, its under discussion. What else is there to say? Cant start a tournament in a day. And like I said before, The owners have lives, the admins have lives, and we also have numerous other servers to look out for. Lets not forget we like to play games too. There could also be other community events in the works.
Patience.
Now how bout we all calm down. No more sly posts that insult the "upper-echelons" (seeing as how that is a good way to not get the tourney going). And definitely listen to fozzy. If TBS truly represents 40% of the server, than that should be enough to get it going.

I think some perspective is in order...
The original thread was started because the CS:S server has been essentially dead for months now. The tournament was suggested as a means to renew interest in CS:S. Many in the community expressed interest and... the thread was left to stagnate for a month. Whatever was misconstrued, all we want is for an admin to say "Yes, a tourney is feasible. We're discussing as to whether or not to do it." or "Not a chance in hell." It's not much to ask - we are NOT after a commitment either way, though updates would be nice.
If the tournament doesn't happen, fine. We're all still left with the problem as to how to maintain a population on the CS:S server. This is what is underlying all of this. We can start the server, sure, but there's clearly not enough WiH regs to keep the population up over a prolonged period of time. That means something needs to be done to keep non-WiHers coming back to the server. There's been an abundance of suggestions, ranging from the tourney to adding/removing maps, mods, etc. but little action (at least that we can see). That's extremely frustrating from our perspective. If wanting to revive the CS:S portion of the community is too demanding, then I'm guilty as charged.
I understand that the owner/admins have lives and other servers to manage. Perhaps, then, it's time to entrust one or more people with access to the server in order to add/remove maps, mods, or what-have-you. We're not trying to insult or attack anyone - these are the realities of the matter. Neither time nor patience is going to magically fix the server or stop more regs from drifting away. We can pop the server, but we can't make new people like the server content and stay long enough to become part of the community.
There's my $.02.

Excellent point, can't agree more.

An office 24/7, a dust2 24/7, and a large-scale custom maps server similar to wdf and csg. One of each and we'd be rollin' till the end o' time :D

Whatever was misconstrued, all we want is for an admin to say "Yes, a tourney is feasible. We're discussing as to whether or not to do it." or "Not a chance in hell." It's not much to ask - we are NOT after a commitment either way, though updates would be nice.
I said that. Last I checked, I was a senior admin here. I dont understand why that isnt good enough for everyone. It is under discussion. Since it is under discussion, it must be feasible. We would not be discussing it if it were not feasible. Can I say that we have made a commitment? no. But I know that it has been brought up to the administration.
Like I said, I dont know why that is not good enough.

Well I can't speak for others, but at least knowing it's being discussed is at least something.

Ah OK. As I read your previous posts, I got the impression that you were outside the loop in terms of what the owners were discussing since you said you were sure the tourney was being discussed - as a matter of opinion (as opposed to saying you knew it was being discussed.) Simple misunderstanding then; it wasn't clear that you were part of the discussion or that the whole thing was even being looked at. Nevertheless, an update as to what convictions the powers-that-be might have would be nice for all of us who have been holding our breaths for so long...

I'm the ****ING owner that started this thread. So let me respond. The majority of the owners do not want to run a tournament. However, we recognize that some of you in the community wants a tournament. So we are asking our admins if any of them wants to organize and run the tournament.
That's where we are with this whole thing.

I say we have a 21+ drunken CSS DeathMatch tourney. No time limit, 100 lives, last man standing (or at the least, standing in-game) wins.
Who's with me?!
