We realize that the whole ranked server thing is EA's money making scheme. Even so, we've been actively pursuing ranked servers behind the scene. At this point in time, there is a chance that we can get a ranked server for you guys to play on.
Market rate for a 64-player server is $512/month. The owners' pockets aren't deep enough to run a ranked server indefinitely. But we, War is Hell, are hoping that we can provide one long enough for you to gain ranks and unlock the weapons. War is Hell wants to be able to provide a superior playing environment for our members.
So we're trying to get a feel for what you guys want.
A) Would you want WiH to run a ranked server?
B) Would you play on WiH BF2 ranked server exclusively?
C) Would you be willing to donate a little bit to help out with the cost ?
Based on your inputs, the owners will decide what the course of action. While this is going on, War is Hell will have an unranked 64-player server up at game launch for you.
Thank you for your time!

A) That would be cool. It wont define the game for me but it would be a plus.
B) At this point, do you even have to ask. I am also getting afew more people to start playing on WIH servers.
C) Absolutly would be able to give for this. If you guys think a ranked server is the way to go I am behind you all the way, and by my understanding of that term, that dosnt mean just moral support.

Yes to all 3...
Problem is, how long would you guys have to run the ranked server to make all of us happy. You'd have some issues with people donating and not getting the unlockables before you starting a non-ranked server.. i dunno, i just think there would be problems.

I'll probably never get any unlockables, but you will have my support.

This is the kind of feedback we like to see. I know more of you guys are playing BF2 so how about giving us some inputs?

If this is a ranked server, we won't have access to any code. And if we did have access, we won't unlock the weapons b/c EA will blacklist us again.

From what I understand at release they could care less if unranked servers unlock the code (at least according to the EA community reps). The only reason they "supposedly" got upset about it with the demo is that no one was supposed to be able to play with the "unlockable weapons" in the beta. At least that is what I understood it to mean. Basically unlocking the weapons/time on the demo is a no no, release they don't care what you do.
Here is a link where they talk about it, 4th post down:
http://forum.eagames.co.uk/viewtopi...er=asc&start=60
and the quote:
The issue is not with modding.
As stated in yesterday's release Battlefield 2 will be highly supportive of modders and variations built on the BF2 engine. The issue lies, moreover, with the fact that this is just the demo and it is being extended beyond its intended length and feature set by modders against the EULA.
The demo is intended to give gamers a taste of the Battlefield experience to come rather than giving away everything in one go.
No such issue will exist with the full release.
Might not have to spend the money after all. However, I would suggest DLing the release server and looking at the EULA in it to see if there is anything "iffy" in it's wording.

The latest community update states very clearly that messing with the unlockables will get your IP blacklisted.
Battlefield 2 Retail Server Files Available
In anticipation of next week's launch of Battlefield 2 at retail, we are releasing the Unranked server files for Win32 and Linux. Be advised that, as with the demo, servers that are caught allowing users to play with the unlock weapons using the python workaround will incur a one week ban from the server list. While we encourage mod teams to discover cool things to do with the python scripts, we reserve the right to de-list servers that find ways to undermine the core features of the game using these tools. We will be sure to update the community when we do begin punishing a tweak that falls into this category.
If you are going to tweak the Python files and you are unsure whether you might be doing something that DICE and EA would consider undermining a core game feature, please feel free to send a note to BFHQ@ea.com and ask for our feedback. We want to re-affirm that for the most part anything goes on Unranked servers.

I am sorry that is just such BS... I am highly tempted now simply not to buy the game... I find it hard support a company that is that dictorial. It's just a try at making more money for them with the ranked servers, and personally I think IF and WHEN ASE comes out with support for BF2 that will go away as people will start saying "fine blacklist us, we'll still show up on ASE server lists". And no, to me this is not some issue of it being their game they can do what they want with it. It's a matter of they are saying "If you play on ranked servers then you can get different (and in some cases better weapons) than other players who do not, and those who do not play on ranked servers will still have to deal with it" as you can use any weapons on any servers once you unlock them. They also haven't stated how long it will take to unlock the weapons. They might have written it in such a way that it would take ~100 hrs+ played on ranked servers for an avg gamer to unlock the stuff. Again which I find BS. They're just trying to shut down people like us which is wrong.

I hear ya meltdown. I've been fighting the EA battle since the demo was released. But in the end, DICE did make a awesome game. Not perfect, but pretty damn close! Why deny yourself of the fun? The best way to show your disapproval with EA is not to play on the EA ranked servers. If things go right, we could have a ranked server for all of us to play on. If not, we still have an unranked server.

I dont think unlockables are useless. The MEC Sniper weapon becomes something like the US sniper weapon, far far more powerful then the shitty auto-sniper MEC gets off the bat. ( doesnt stop me from always placing in the top 5 though :P)
Dont forget we have a 3'D army ( chinese) to unlock all there crap too.
With those two things in mind, unless we have to grind for Upgraded weapons like everquest, I dont feel it is in the best interest of our community to throw our money away if we can obtain unlockables fast. Why dont we hold off on burning the cash til we see how long it takes to unlock things. If its done quickly we can all just grind it out , save everyones cash, and then retreat back to our community. K?

Snipers all receive the Barret .50 cal
