FRANKSTOWN — A local man suffered a fatal head wound Wednesday night on the grounds of the Hollidaysburg Sportsmens Club when a military-style weapon discharged.

State police at Hollidaysburg are expected to release his name and additional details today. They were notifying family members Wednesday night and trying to piece together the chain of events that led to the gun’s discharge about 8:30 p.m.

“We’re not sure of exactly what happened here,” Trooper Matthew McCalpin said. “We don’t know if the gun went off in error or if his actions caused it or what happened.”

The gun was a Gatling 7.62 minigun, a weapon mounted on the back of a Hummer that was parked on the club’s grounds, which feature a shooting range.

The minigun was part of a weapons exhibition offered by East Coast Gun Sales, which hosted a pistol shoot and dinner for those attending a three-day conference offered by Digital Solutions/Inmate Telephone Inc., a provider of computer software for the corrections industry.
State police issued a statement at 2:30 a.m. Thursday with additional details. They said an autopsy is scheduled today and that "the scene is not considered safe at this point as the machine gun has not been examined."

Police said about 100 people were in attendance.

State police are investigating with the assistance from members of the U.S. Army at For Belvoir in Virginia.

The conference, held at the Blair County Convention Center, was scheduled to end today.

My guess as to what happened is that there was a round left in the feed system, the guy was looking down the business end and spun the barrel assy by hand. Once the barrel clicks into position, it will fire, whether it's done mechanically or by hand.

if so....

Rule #1: Never look down the barrel of a gun. (at least that was the first rule my father taught me :dunno: )

If so.....dumbass.....

Who looks down the barrel of a mini gun anyhow that was discharged moments before?......

Seriously...

I actually think it was just there for display. It shouldn't have been loaded at all. Then again, the only way to completely unload a minigun is to shoot it dry. Someone failed to do that somewhere along the line.

Perhaps but aren't you not suppose to touch displays like that? o.o

There are worse fates than death, in my most humble of opinions.
