My old man has done sort of pooling football betting thing at work....
I guess that's where they bet on a game each week......whatever game comes up I am assuming.
Anyone know a good list to bet their money on?
Yes this man knows nothing of football at all.

I'd take that cause it probably means a win for SD on Sunday.

I'm actually pretty sure he's setting the all-time touchdowns, yards, attempts, and wins records this season (he's already got the most completions and consecutive starts by a QB).. but forget all that. Has Grossman learned how to throw to his own team yet?

grossman has not learnt to grab the ball on the snap let alone throw, lets start at basics here.... i am sure he is a huge homophobe and the fact that his hand is near some other guys pinor is reason for him to go all squeemish and girly like, hell for what he gets paid i would probably cup the centers nuts on a cold day if he wanted.... but i am a cheap whore.. :D

Hopefully my Steelers do better this year, Big Ben better be back to 2004-2005 form and not mr 23 interceptions. Dunno how the new head coach thing is going to affect them this year but more than 8 wins would be nice.
The Colts D killed my fantasy team too, I have Brees as my QB and he got 1 measly point...
I think the Patriots are the favorites this year but if the Colts play all season like they did this past Thurs I would take them to repeat this year.

On the positive side, I think the Pats have filled all there holes, there D looks strong, and Can someone tell me who has a better wide receiver core in the NFL than the Pats? The Colts are good yes, but i think with the Pats additions, they are soo deep now!!! Brady has soo many targets it is nuts!!!

****ing cheating ass patriots...Belicheck is a complete **** in my opinion. I have lost all respect I had for him as a coach, only for his statement that said it was his interpretation of the rules...uhhh dumbass the rules say specifically no camera equipment on the field. What is so hard to interpret about that for a self proclaimed genius? Would they have won that game anyway...of course the jets suck, but how much more of this has been going on and for how long. I'm not going to say that stuff is tainted for sure yet...but there is a chance I will when this is all said in done.

That game pissed me off more than anything else, and I am not a fan of either of those teams.
The Bears game was the second game of the double header, with the Colts Titans as the first game. That game ended early so we went into bonus coverage, yet they never switched at the kickoff and was forced to watch the Browns Bengals game until the end 30 minutes after kick off.
So to CBS :upyours:

As for the Cinci-Cleveland game, I thought it was a pretty damn embarassing on Cinci's part (the defense at least). It was a great game, down to the end, but like blood said, the Browns don't score 51 points on anyone
And so how about Favre with that all-time wins record..

3, but i suppose it doesn't make much difference in your point.
I have to agree with Gorro and Jimmy, I'm sure they're not the only ones that have done this in the past and they just happened to have gotten caught. Hopefully this proves a lesson to the rest of the league and it won't happen again.
Aside: I thought it was kind of funny for the AFC North, Steelers > Browns > Bengals > Ravens, lol.
sir_digalot
09-17-2007, 09:45 PM
they all cheat, just some are less skilled at hiding it, unfortunatly the bigger reasons for cheating are multi million dollar contracts, if you capped heavily or took all the financial incentives out of sport, they would be less inclined to cheat.
but when you are looking at tens of millions of dollars for looking good and being the fastest strongest etc, you want that extra edge, and if you are a team, then all the better you get more money for better players and more sponsorship... it all comes down to the almighty dollar....

Did you watch any of them, they were damn close that came down to a kick... so I guess Vinetari had a camera in his foot too huh? yeah that must be it... seriously the video gives them that much of an edge? I finally had to break down and find the NFL thread that I knew would be here.
I love this whole thing about cameragate/spygate/videogate/patriotgate...for the love of God can we settle on a name for this thing!!! I will certainly say that I am extremely disappointed with the Patriots for doing this. I was seriously ashamed of my own team, but I like Gorro will stick by my team even during bad times, because that's what good fans do. I am however appalled by the reaction of so many people around the league (but not all).
The Patriots deserved to be punished for their actions, however do you all remember what was being said when this story broke. At first they were talking about the Patriots losing draft picks late in next years draft, then they were talking about maybe the Patriots losing a 2nd round draft pick, suddenly people are saying suspend Belichick...some even said suspend him for half the season! Of course what ended up happening was that the Pats lost a 1st round draft pick, Belichick received the highest fine in history and the Pats lost 250,000. That may seem "light" to everyone outside New England, but that is the single biggest penalty to a team in the history of the NFL!
Another argument that makes me sick is the "this isn't fair because look what they did to Wade Phillips" argument. Wade Phillips committed a felony violation of the law!!! Don't tell me he needed HGH for a medical condition, he may well have, but the fact is his doctor didn't agree with him and he broke the law to get it. Bringing a camera in to film your opponent is wrong and breaks NFL rules, but it doesn't reach anywhere near the same level as committing a felony.
There's also the Steve Young argument (All superbowls are now tainted). This really grinds my gears too. The reason Steve Young gave was that this was a "long term systematic attempt to break the rules". They got caught ONCE! Now if the shoes on the other foot I am going to say I doubt this was a one time thing. I will not however assume it has been going on for 6 years straight. The Patriots have had plenty of employees come and go through Belichicks tenure as coach and many of them have been disgruntled. Not one of them until Mangini ever blew the whistle. Has it occurred to people that this is because this type of cheating was not a frequent occurence.
Also what about Belichicks first season with the Pats (5-11) and his third (9-7, missed playoffs) and his 6th (10-6, lost to Broncos in 2nd round). If it's such a huge help why did those seasons not turn out as successful. Finally, let's look at those superbowls. The first thing that I need to explain though is that the purpose of filiming signals is so that they can be analyzed at half time and relayed to the coordinators in order to make adjustments.
The first Superbowl they led at half time 14-3 and ultimately won it 20-17, getting outscored 6-14 in the 2nd half.
The second Superbowl they led 14-10 at halftime and won 32-29, being outscored 18-19 in the second half.
The third Superbowl they were tied 7-7 and went on to win 17-14, the only superbowl they outscored their opponents in the second half.
There's no major sign of an advantage there and that's because it's extremely unlikely they were cheating. They were at the Superbowl, how is anyone NOT going to notice a guy on the sideline with a camera!
Look, I am disappointed in my team for doing this and we deserve criticism without doubt. I will unapologetically say however that the punishment was fair. It was the biggest punishment to a team in NFL history and NFL history shows that teams have been trying to steal each others signals for years, this was simply the first time anyone tried using a video camera to do it. (That we know of)
Now no doubt the haters will come out and bash me for this post, so bash away!
Oh and remember: You can't spelling Little Whining Bastard without LT.

09-18-2007, 03:21 PM
I agree that punishment was fair, and don't agree with the wade phillips argument, superbowls aren't tainted...but bellicheck is in my opinion.

The bears truly just got better overnight.
They need someone who can move the chains a little bit and keep their defense off the field. And that's not a knock on their defense, it's simply stating the fact that they have been prone to get tired in the past and a good offense will eventually wear them down (as they would any defense) if they get the chance

I'm actually very impressed by Tony Romo. He has shown an enormous amount of poise. I liked the way everytime he was close to getting sacked no matter how close it was he always kept his eyes upfield. He made a lot of very intelligent decisions last Sunday. The fumbled snap was way overblown last year and now people can see that.

Yeah the first half was bad, and I am not talking about the game, but the telecast with Al Michaels and Madden. I knew it was going to be a Favre love fest but come on!

Couple of things
First 15 starts of each quarterback for career
Brady Romo
W/L 12 -3 11-4
Pass yds 3091 4149
TD/Int 21-12 29-18
Pass Rate 89.3 95.4
Not too bad for Romo, against arguably the best quarterback in the NFL in his first 15, even beats him in a couple categories with less talent around him
But we can all say not too bad for either considering Brady was a 6th round pick and Romo was undrafted
Im a Cowboys fan by the way, tried to be as unbiased as possible:)

Take a look at the 2001 Patriots roster and tell me Romo had less talent.
I'm not disputing your claim that Romo has been very good, he has. But before we anoint him the next Brady, or the next Favre, let's wait for him to win a playoff game.
Edit: Oh and one more stat for you. Here's Brady and Romo vs Dan Marino
Brady Romo Marino
W/L 12 -3 11-4 11-4
Pass yds 3091 4149 3308
TD/Int 21-12 29-18 32-9
Pass Rate 89.3 95.4 N/A
Romo's start has been great, but Dan the man was insane. Not to mention in his second season he tossed 48 TDs!
Edit2: Dear CrockD, please actually READ other posters comments before posting! :)
Originally read your comment as saying that Romo was the arguably the best in his first 15, then reread it and realized you were actually saying Brady was. My bad. I would still contend that Marino had the greatest start to a career ever.

Guess what until Romo wins a championship he aint shit...just like they said of manning until he finally won. Always compared manning with those guys, but couldn't put him up there b/c of no ring. Well guess what manning will be better than romo, brady, and marino when he is done. I mean honestly Romo hasn't even had a full season, quit acting like he is the shit. Brady is MUUUUUCH better and closer to perfection than romo will ever be.

Sunday will be a big challenge, should be a good test for the whole team. Not just the QB.
I don't think anyone is knocking on you or even Romo, its the media that is creating this guy as if he is the greatest QB to walk onto the field. The game certainly did matter to the Pats. I have absolutely no desire to see us go back to the RCA dome. That may be the hardest place to play a game in the NFL. I'll take a cold snowy night in Foxboro over the RCA dome.
And in a reconcilatory note, I have to say that Tony Dungy and the Colts really are a class act. They're the first team to play us all year that hasn't had anything negative to say. What were the Bucs thinking when they let him go.
As for Peterson, yeah that was a simply stunning performance, not just the number of yards but the fierceness with which he runs on every play. As for MVP, err there is this guy called Brady who is on pace to shatter the single season TD pass record and the passer rating record.
Other NFL notes:
Wow did the Cowboys look good last night. Romo continues to impress me with his decision making skills.
Also, could you people in Green Bay tell me what the hell you put in the water over there! I get tired of hearing people tell a football player when they should retire. This whole season has been a big middle finger to those pundits from Brett Favre. "I ain't done yet beyaaatch!"

Losing Freeney was a huge loss for the Colts. Rice should be able to fill in adequately, but his age is an issue. The Chargers are a very talented team but they are learning the hard way that changing your coaching staff can be very painful. They'll make the playoffs because their division sucks, but they're not going to find consistency so long as Norv is their coach.
I also agree that the Colts lack of personnel and Manning's shockingly bad play led to their demise last Sunday. The Chargers D did look pretty good though. The Colts are in a bind, but they'll come back strong, don't count them out yet.

Jacksonville @ San Diego
(If Pitt wins winner will play NE, otherwise Indy)
NFC:
Bye Teams:
Dallas
Green Bay
Wild Card:
Detroit @ Seattle
(Detroit plays Dallas if they win, Seattle plays GB if they win)
NY Giants @ Tampa Bay

Remember the Indy game? You know, the one where the Patriots had 100+ more penalty yards than the Colts? Not to mention that the pass at the end of the game almost won them the game despite Derrick Mason having one of the most obscene offensive pass interferences in history.
To Ravens fan: You guys played lights out, I really thought it was over, I was in complete despair. What a tremendously played game. You guys get a better offensive play calling scheme and a better QB and you'll be right back near the top. Your defense was lights out, McGahee has always been awesome and Mason and Heap (when he's healthy) are enough to provide a good offensive spark.

Edit: Actually I honestly don't care.
Plain and simple the Ravens should have won.
"Without an ill-timed timeout, the Ravens would have been in position to run out the clock on the Patriots tonight. They stuffed Tom Brady on fourth down, only to learn the play did not count."
There needs to be a rule about this. If the play is played out regardless of whether a time out was "supposedly" called it should count. No "redos." It would fix the whole "we called a timeout before the kick so it doesn't count" crap too.

Typed up my comment before Jimmy's later edits.
Tuck rule: That was the rule...sorry the refs enforced the ACTUAL rule.
Extra Clock: Yes with 15 minutes to go in the game (that's an entire quarter folks) and the Steeler up by 3 the pats got an extra 52 seconds...and this was during week 3 of the season...such a pivotal game. To quote Bill Cowher ""It really didn't affect the outcome"
Refs Suck Rule: Great source by the way:jerkit: Not being able to see the play I can't make a judgement on it. The source just says the Pats were leading and doesn't say where the Jags were on the field. Even if they had won, we would have been 11-5 instead of 12-4 and still would have played Jets in the 1st round.
Sounds like someone's bought into all the "Hate the Pats" hype. I don't care that my coach doesn't care to wear a suit to the game, or care to give long press conferences. This is the NFL, not a highschool debate team. I was embarrased by the spygate stuff, but our routine ass-kicking of much of our opposition I think proves we know how to play football.
I'm more than happy to give other teams there due no matter what i think of them if and when they beat us. See my congratulatory comments to Killer B for his Colts beating us in the AFC championship game and then my further comments after the Colts won the superbowl (oh and I was actually routing for the Colts in that game because I wanted to see the best team win). I get annoyed by people who spend their time hating teams instead of giving them their due or keeping their mouths shut. But it's a free country, feel free to hate away. In the meantime i'll be happy to heap praise on the Eagles and Ravens who both played terrific games when no one thought they had a chance.
Edit: Thanks for adding an edit there Jimmy without mentioning it. Oh the "supposed" time-out, you mean the one the RAVENS defensive coordinator actually called..you know..the one where you can go look at on sportscenter right now and see that they called it and see that the ref whistled it BEFORE the ball was snapped?

The rule is this...
The guys in the booth went over the NFL rule for calling a TO and it states only a player or head coach can call a TO....Rex Ryans (BAL D coordinator) called the TO. So, the TO should not have been allowed.
I would imagine managing that is not the easiest thing to do. Is it the ref's job...yep.

Haven't read this thread but saw it and have been thinking about how I usually watch the first few games of a season (dedicated) to see if the 49ers are going to suck for the season. If they seem like it, I just watch games out of convenience for me.
This year I really thought they were going to be better... Smith needs to learn to NOT get sacked, hell hit the lineman in the side of the head.

Like other people I am very tired of all the accolades that were put on Romo before he started playing well. Now however he is proving he deserves those accolades more and more. Sunday's game was a gritty performance and he's proven that not only can he get big numbers, but he has the ability to be clutch when it's needed.

Actually I admit I am scared about the rest of the season. Every single game the Pats have been looking a little more tired and worn down. Colts fans can testify to how much the pressure of trying to go undefeated can put on a team. I know they're not going to rest their starters so they can go for the record and that's what I want them to do. Heck, I think anybody would want their team to try for an undefeated season simply because of what it would mean, but it would be awful (for us) if we lost in the first round of the playoffs because the team was exhausted.
Right now the one good thing is that Richard Seymour is finally starting to play at the level he's capable of. We're going to need the defense to step up in the playoffs.
You guys do get a first round bye so there is the week of rest they will need.

Actually I think Belichick's strategy of putting his starters in every game is gonna hurt the Patriots during the playoffs. They're gonna be tired by the time the playoffs rolls around. The Colts on the other hand have had time to recover from injuries and are looking ready for the playoffs.

Patriots, Undefeated 16-0 season taking the achievement from the Dolphins 1972. Then you have Brady passing up Manning's 2004 record of 50 TD passes in one season. You got Moss passing up Rice's 1987 TD catches in one season. And last but not least the Patriots closed the regular season with 589 points unseating the 556 points set by the 1998 Minnesota Vikings.
All that's only going to get better if they win the Superbowl. Man it's going to be hard to choose a side on this one but I think I will say Pats over Cowboys.
Unfortunately the Aggies lost to Penn. We could have won it too. Very poor coaching plays in the 4th quarter. Everyone knew Lane should have been put in and banged his way into the end zone. Then McGee screwing up... we deserved to lose that game. Played like ass 2nd quarter on ward. Disappointing.

Sounds like someone needs a little lesson in calculating strength of schedule.
First of all you have to calculate OUT a teams wins and losses against its own schedule. Being good or being bad should not affect how good your opponent is, so when you add up the collective wins and losses of your opponent you need to remove your victories against them and your losses to them. This is exactly how the NFL calculates strength of schedule. As of 1pm today it goes like this:
The Cowboys opponents record is 107 - 104 for a winning percentage of 50.71%
The Patriots opponents record is 112 - 113 for a winning percentage of 49.78%
Wow that's an enormous difference right there. Less than one whole percent. Given that the annual NFL strength of schedule can vary by over 10% that 1% is fairly meaningless. However if the Cowboys would like to trade any of their games for games against the Colts, Steelers or Chargers I'd be happy to trade. And of course lets not forget how well the Cowboys played against the Patriots...oh wait, that's right, you got your ass beaten like a red-headed stepchild AT HOME against the Patriots.
I'd be more congenial about all this, but given how complimentary I have been about Romo all season and how impressed I've been with the Cowboys as soon as a Cowboys fan is going to start screaming blood murder over strength of schedule I am obligated as a Pats fan to remind them of the facts. I still think Romo is a tremendous quarterback and will be for a long time and I think he'll be going to the Hall of Fame one day.
As for the 72 Dolphins I'll agree there. Nothing the Patriots can do, even 19-0 will EVER take away from what they accomplished. The most we can do is join them at the top of the mountain, not replace them. It's not their fault they didn't play a 16 game schedule. I'll say nothing bad about them at all, in fact I think Mercury Morris's attitude towards the Patriots is hilarious. I say good for him, he's earned the right to be as cocky as he wants.
As for the cheating thing, well actually you did just mention it and we've been over that plenty of times. We got caught in week 1, we got the stiffest penalty in NFL history and since then we've had eyes all over us looking for cheating. If that wasn't enough perhaps our NFL record 315 point differential should change some minds. No? Okay how about out 19th consecutive regular season victory? No? Okay well then how about beating the world champion Colts in a game we were flagged for a franchise record 150 yards? No? Well then I will send you a badge in the mail that says "Hater" and you can wear it with pride when you should be spending your time being proud of your own teams accomplishments. (Romo's incredible season, Phillips getting TO to be a team player, a defense that's had injuries and continued to pound the opposition, Jason Whitten finally getting recognition for being one of the best tight-ends in the NFL)
Finally to Giants fans I have to say I tip my cap. You had nothing to play for, but you knew what that game meant. You played with incredible intensity and with the exception of having a linebacker match up with Randy Moss too often your gameplan was exceptional. Play like that against the NFC in the playoffs and you WILL be representing the NFC in the Superbowl. I'll be routing for you against the Bucs, which is unusual because I usually route for the Bucs as my Dad used to be a statistician for them.

Everyone keeps ruling out the Colts. They are probably the biggest threat to the Pats superbowl run. Other than that, I don't see any AFC team that stands a chance against the Pats. So it all comes down to the game I really actually want to see which would be the Pats and the Colts again. And Dallas vs. the Giants in the NFC Title match.

the only thing i have to say is this.
the pats are a good team, there is no doubt in that (then again so are the packers and the useless bears swept their cheeseheaded butts back up to cheeseland :D)
anyway this season really should have been a 15-1 simply due to the fiasco at the beginning, in most sports if a team ( read coach\whoever) is caught cheating, which he was, 1 play 4 plays a whole game whatever.... the team should forfeit the win... as an individual would do if they were caught cheating... however in this case it did not happen for whatever reason, so like baseball and barry bonds etc, i think their superbowl victory should have an asterix next to it also just like BB's home run baseball.
but thats just me, i am not trying to knock the team for a great acheivement, just the system for not being hard enough on cheaters when caught
