What a bloodbath...I expected quite a bit of death, but I must admit I was shocked by the magnitude of it.

Oh I know what you mean. I was expecting some of them to die but not all of the ones who died. I was expecting Remus to die what with his marriage and the birth of his son, but I wasn't expecting Tonks to die as well. I guess I should have been expecting both of them to die. God I could probably go on and on about the book but I won't at the moment.

When Remus asked Harry to be the godfather I kind of had a feeling both Remus and Tonks would die and Harry would end up like sirius and be a father/friend image (though not in prison or dead). The epilogue was a little disappointing for me I mean all we find out is what im guessing everyone knew would happen and no real details about any of it.

Yeah I kind of wish that the Epilogue was a little bit longer and we got to find out a little bit more of what happened to everyone.

It was a really good read. I was surprised at the deaths of Fred and Tonks the most. Although I always figured a Weasley would die. The earliness of Mad-Eyes demise was startling, I expected him to at least make it half-way. I have to say though, after the Hogwarts fight I'm somewhat looking forward to the movie adaptation of this. That battle should be pretty kick-ass on the silver screen, with the spiders, giants, etc.

why would you kill the owl

Leadfoot

I suppose going on a quest like they did, the owl would have been a hindrance anyways, although the owl could have been passed on to the weasleys or something, instead of being killed off. I too thought that it wouldnt have been one of the weasly twins killed, maybe one of the elder brothers though.
Great book though, epilogue didnt leave much for continuation, so that will most likely be the last.

But of all the weasleys to die, why not Percy? And the owls death caught me completely by surprise, I also thought Hagrid was gone too, I thought what a hell of a way to start the book take out 2 of the characters we have known since the very beginning.

I really don't think even if Hedwig lived that he would have gone on the journey anyways. They had to leave the wedding so fast after all the protections had failed that they barely got out in time.

I wasn't surprised by any of the deaths. Dobby's seemed the saddest. They certainly spent the most time on it.

One thing, though: the author needs to actually talk to a boy about first kisses, important kisses, etc. She writes it all like it's a Regency Romance Jr. novel. "They kissed as they had never kissed before"....uh...okay.

But the action was great, the pacing was good too. When they robbed Gringott's I wanted to tell my wife, "Man, you won't believe what they're doing!".

You do kind of wonder about "loose ends" though. Like, does Harry get a chance to go back and finish his last year at Hogwarts? Or do they give him an honorary degree? What kind of career would a guy like that want? I mean, he isn't a professor...and he probably wouldn't want to be an Auror after seeing so much violence. But what would you DO with your life after reaching such a huge peak so young?

Ah well. At least he scores with a redhead. I love readheads. :D

I joked about Hedwig dieing to people at work before the book came out. I thought it was silly though and wouldn't happen. I was surprised Fred died..and Tonks. Wasn't so surprised about Lupin. I was surprised how Snape went out for sure. Doby's death was saddening as well.

I knew Snape wasn't just a punk ass.

This might sound stupid, but I always hoped she would give Snape's character some depth that would connect him with Potter more closely. He was always so two dimensional, "The Forgiven Betrayer" who ended up being the bad guy anyway. I was relieved when she let him give Harry his memories. They were among the most vivid and spellbinding parts of the book to me, because they explained so much and because they finally turned Snape into a hero. His motives were flawed, sure, but he never broke his word to Dumbledore.

And, as the rest of the book indicates, even some of the greatest heroes like Dumbledore can have flawed motives but can change when they see their errors.

All in all, this has been my favorite book, because Harry finally breaks out of his sullen funk and becomes such a hero, and it finally pits good against evil in such stark relief.

At the pace that characters were dying, I didn't think anyone was going to be left by the end of the book.

Glad Snape got shown to be a hero after all.

A little disappointed that she didn't go into what their professions were.

I think she left the door open for several more book, maybe not all about Harry, but she could do prequels or even go on about here kids.

Glad I fianlly finished the book.

Way more people died than I thought would.

Dobby dying really struck a chord with me, don't know why.....but I think of all the deaths that was the most traumatic (for me)

It was a fast read for me. Unfortunately I kept getting interuppeted...so it took a few days longer than it should have :dunno: :D

It was truly action packed.

Maybe the franchise will get splintered off to other writers. Kind of like some of the Star Wars books. They all have to integrate together, but are written by multiple authors.

possible titles

"Crabbe & Goyle: It only hurts the first time.......our secret affairs while at Hogwarts"
"Neville: From under Harry's shadow"
"Harry Pottter: He snogged me and left me.... "
"Ron Weasly's guide to spider repellant"
"How to serve like a House Elf......without the self-abuse"
"Great Quidditch teams throughout history"
"How does a giant actually MATE with a human????? "
"Malfoy: Life after Hogwarts"

etc
etc

I think with the amount of blood you could have filled a bath tub.

Had one of the "big three" died (Harry, Ron, or Hermione) I wouldn't have been happy at all. It would have been very hard for me to re-read the original books knowing that there really wasn't much point for whoever gets killed.

I think the side characters chosen for death were well done.

i was kinda hoping harry and ron would run of and have a happy gay marriage somewhere, and possibly a spin off book with ginny and hermione in a strip club or pr0n setting, but alas this is a book for younger readers.....

It kinda pissed me off that Fred died. He was my favorite character in the books, and I expected that if they were going to die, the twins would have died at the same time, rather than just one kicking the bucket.

Mad Eye's early death suprised me too, I thought he'd die much, much later in the book.

Dobby came out of nowhere, saved all their asses, then gets f*cking impaled on a knife. :( That was the worst part of the entire series to me.

I wasn't going to, but I couldn't resist :D

The book was really good, but definitely not my favorite! Ages better than the 6th one though (that i felt had its lengths and she wrapped it up so fast as if she was procrastinating it and had to finish in 3 days).

I hate it what she had done out of Dumbledore. He was my favorite character from the beginning. (possible reason that i hated the 6th book so much). It felt so coldblooded that even if he apparently saw his mistakes from the past and had changed, he bred Harry for the occasion. How sick is that? The end when they meet didn't make it up for me...

Altogether, the book didn't have its strength like other to me. It didn't feel as emotional. I didn't feel she made Snape really a hero. That needed more, and there was enough material to make it better.
I was sad that Dobby died, but I didn't cry. It didn't come to me as close as in the other books, none of the deaths. (I remember sobbing when Sirius and Dumbledore died, I could barely see the letters from my tears but i kept reading). Not as dramatic. Dunno, maybe the 6th put a wall between me and the books.

I didn't get what's up with the crying baby (?) (was it a baby?) at the end while Harry and Dumbledore talk. Didn't also get why Malfoy was the real owner of the wand. (did i read too fast?)

Loved the fact that she let Neville kill the last Horcxsfjhkjsdfthingy.

And very very glad that she didn't kill Ron or Hermione. The way she killed everyone Harry cared for in the last few books, I was really happy to see them leave the book healthy :)

It was a good read, and I am glad I did it. I will start rereading the books soon, and I might stop before the 6th one :D

btw. i found your spoilers actually encouraging to buy the book. they did not reveal too much, but enough that I knew I wouldn't hate it as the 6th book.

Thanks guys and girls!!

The little baby thing in Kings Cross Station is the part of Voldemorts soul that was inside of Harry. And the reason that Malfoy was the real owner of the Elder Wand was because he is the one who disarmed Dumbledore on the top of the tower in the 6th book, Snape just killed him.

Supergirl

thanks Wibby. I kinda thought that about the baby and Voldemort.
Thanks for the info on Malfoy, I forgot about that :)

And in the strangest twist yet for this series:

Don't understand that..............

I'll use the same argument that both sides will use. "Why does it matter?"

I don't see what possible good can come out of that.

On a personal note, I'm glad that wasn't emphasized in the books.

Supergirl
10-22-2007, 09:45 PM
LOL me too!

it's really WTF? why does it matter... it'll just get the books on the ban list.

I really wish she hadn't let this little information out until after all of the movies were made ( the whole Dumbledore gay thing). I'm just afraid that not that it's out (and him too! :ky:) that some Hollywood director or screenwriter is going to portray Dumbledore as some flaming homo, wearing pink and taking fifth year behind the gargoyle if you know what I mean!

I agree. it will make the films way more political than they needed to be.

I can't think of any reason to "expose" this...other than to drum up interest in future novels...............is stupid.

ALTHOUGH, I think ANY "Harry Potter" novel/movie would develop it's own steam.

Classic case of potential $$$$$$$ overriding everything else... Is it right, only time will tell.

I hope Rowling enjoys her $$$$$$$$$$$$

ON A SIDE NOTE: I hope they open the Harry Potter universe to everyone.....

I can see mutlitple story lines to persue throughout the novels. !

I think she will wait and see how her next few books do. If they tank, she still has sole control over the HP franchise. If the books do well, she will say that she is done with HP and open it up with just some minor oversight.
