View Full Version : Connection problems with BF2

Now that the BF2 demo is out, I'm noticing a problem with my computer or internet connection ...... not sure which it is. I can't even move in the game because I'm experiencing so much rubber-banding. I checked my in-game status and it showed my ping fluctuating from 100's all the way to 1100 or more. I have no idea what could be causing this.If I play the BF2 demo in single player, I have no problems pushing both audio and video to highest quality levels, but even if I move those levels down to lowest for multiplayer, I'm still rubber-banding so badly that I can't play. My system specs are:

A8N-SLI Deluxe MB
Geforce 6800 ULTRA
2 Gigs of RAM
Athlon 64 FX 55
2 x 180GB Harddrives

It is a VERY new computer, so I don't think mine is virusus......but I'll check.

Can any of you tell how much bandwidth you are using with BF2??

Or, if you know how to limit how much bandwidth it uses.

I run everything else fine (CS:Source, BF1942 and ALL the mods, and BF:V and ALL mods with a ping around 100. ( I connect with ISDN, 128K both ways)

Does BF2 actually use that much bandwidth????

Done a tracert, ping, line tests on dslreports.com, changed modems, tried on a different computer.......

someone was getting a similar issue, they ran a virus and spyware scan and it fixed it.

set it to the only other choie, cable 256

Anyone know if there is a console command to set your connection speed lower?

Fozz most of the time when I connect to a server it loads fine but then once that map position and team selection screen comes up it says: "theres a problem with your connection" when clearly there fackin isn't. : P

It's really stupid because that's happened many a time once I've already been playin on a server for a couple rounds. Makes no sense.

Anyways I tried setting my connection type to t1/dsl as well as virus scanned etc. I checked the EA forums and they have absolutely no answer for it.
I'll check again soon enough to see if they got a solution to either of our problems.

run a traceroute to the server.

look at my "tweak it" post

uhh Drayu I can't find anything to do with router or trace or traceroute on that tweak page... : P

sorry they were separate thoughts.

do you have a router? IF so, there maybe a tab in there that lets you run a traceroute. Just type in the IP of the server and let it rock, then copy paste it back here. You can also do it from the run command, and screenshot it.

Drayu I will try your tweaks when I get home today, maybe tomorrow been hectic on the homefront.

I did a tracert and didn't see any problems. Highest pings were around 140'ish, and no timeouts.

I will do another and post when I get a chance.

Did I mention I am jeoulous of all you guys. :flipoff: Reading all the posts, and only getting to play single player

Man, that totally sucks Fozzy! I wish you could play with us. I take it that it runs fine in single player? Yeah, do another traceroute and post it here; someone might be able to ID a prob. Also, just a few more thoughts:

1) Have you tweaked your XP configuration through start>run>services.msc ? (Optimizing this WILL free up ALOT of system resources. I can always help ya on TS if you have questions)
2) Is your NIC sharing an IRQ with the graphics card? IF so, this could be causing a bottleneck when you join the net
3) Have you optimized the bios? (eg. changing graphics aperature, disabling pallete snoop, etc.)
4) I assume if you have a firewall and virus scanner you have disabled them (including the crappy windows security center. To do that, and I suggest you do go into services.msc through the run command, and disable the security center. Not only does it disable the stupid security pop ups in your taskbar, but also frees up some precious megs)
5) What framerates are you getting? You could use fraps to see. You don't have to record anything, just run it. And when in game it will tell you in the corner of the screen what your framerate is. IS it different from singleplayer to multiplayer?

I will add stuff as I think of them.

Fozzy,

Don't know what happened to you last night, hope everything is good. I also hope what we disabled didn't screw you up. But never fear, here is a link to what the defaults are supposed to be:

Nah, nothing screwed up.

Just forgot to go into my Bios. So I had to restart a couple of times.

Sorry, :yaya:

already told ya in TS, but just in case someone else was following this thread. The tweaks we did, did not hurt anything.

Try turning off VOIP Fozzy. See if that helps.

FozzyBear

did that, even tried running it without TS running.

I didn't get a chance to mess with it last night. Stuck at work till late, then just went home and went to bed.

I think I am going to call the phone company and see if there are any errors on their ISDN card. :dunno: The tracert and pings look fine to me. Did any of you see any problems?

After that I might try a different ISP.

Otherwise looks like I'll be stuck with Single player and CS:S for my online addictions.

FozzyBear

I "Think" I have figured out the problem. It was a bandwidth issue. I have been using both channels of my ISDN to connect =128k. But I finally noticed only ONE of the channels is staying connected=64k. So half the bandwidth = connection problems.

BF2 uses more bandwidth than the other games, not a lot more if your on DSL or Cable.

Guess I'll either be switching ISP's or bitching till they fix it. :)

Maybe the full version will cure ur ills fozz... maybe : P

FozzyBear

Maybe.

I found out the modem banks I dial into black listed one of my SPIDS (one of two phone numbers used by ISDN connections) So I am going to have to get a new number :upyours: So have to wait till Monday, then wait......and wait.....till they get it fixed.

Until then I guess it is just CS:S. I can play it fine with only one channel.
