ok, i had my secondary harddrive fail(from what i can tell) AHHHHH ! F*** !
so there is 25gb of information that i desprately need off it, so i'm just mildly pissed because this is the second maxtor drive that i have had that failed(i've seen an 8gb WD drive from way back that still works) and what makes it odd, it ran and worked and everything then after i restarted after re-installing battlefield1942 it no longer worked(and that hdd smart stuff is bs, it doesn't work)
bios will find it on a boot, but windows cannot access it(but shows up in hardware) i'm just getting amazingly pissed that i have to remember what is on it and where to download everything agian.
what makes it worse, it's going to cost me $80 an hour(first hour up front) just to find out if they can recover what was on the drive and it's not a sure thing. just getting pissed off that maxtor drives are good but they keep breaking even under minimal use.

I've had luck restoring Windows files in Linux. My last semester of college, I had all my code for my final C# project on a floppy disk (stupid, I know). Well wouldn't you know it, a few days before the project was due, the disk went bad. Luckily, using Linux I was able to convert the floppy into an image file and then mount it using the loopback device and bickity bam, I was alble to salvage around 98% of my code.
I don't remember the specific steps I took to do this, but I'm sure if you search Google, you should be able to find something.

you can "lose" data on a drive for a lot of reasons, not just because the drive gave up the ghost.
using a live CD of a linux distribution is one of the best ways to troubleshoot system problems (esp if you have windows installed). the OS runs only from the CD and memory, giving you complete access to your drives. heres a couple of distributions you might want to look into:
http://www.mepis.org
http://www.knoppix.net
both of these sites host (or link to) the binaries for the liveCD, with instructions and lots of information on how to download, burn, run, and use it.

i go into bios, get it to rescan for the drive, and it pops up with no drive active. but might give that a try.
if all goes good, i should be getting my info off the drive(barring it is not a hardware problem like i keep saying it is)

hmm, a short cut would be to ghost the hard drive to an image and try loading the image or even putting the image on another hard drive.

i cannot access the drive at all from windows, or command prompt. and the only noise it makes is spinning up. so i'm pretty sure it's a hardware issue but this bootcd linux is going to be the last try. other then that, it's getting trashed.

send it to me and i'll get the info off for you... i've done this for years and have only had four hard drives i was unable to get data off of...
...course i have tools that are unavailable to the general public...

if this linux thing doesn't work(and i can actually get it out of the country without your border jackasses ripping it open) might have to try that.
but shipping from nova scotia, to texas would be a bastard
and currently i don't have another harddrive to transfer the stuff too.

Did you try to run windows recovery and FIXMBR? Could be a corrupted boot sector.

the drive cannot be remounted in the bios, cannot be mounted by linux, and cannot be mounted by windows.
