Here are some tips that might not be obvious from what I learned last nite. Some of these might or might not be covered by the in-game Tips page. Please feell free to add to this list.
When commanding ships, Left Bumper to bring up Repair and men allocation screen. Put the men where they're needed, either to fix a water problem, to manuveur the ship, or on weapons. I noticed that putting all hands on weapons get my artillery reloaded faster.
X button brings up the command rose, kinda like BF2 Request rose. You can also do this for bases like airfields and shipyards. You set parameters for them. I haven't played with all the orders for a base yet.
Y button zooms in with binocs when you're on a ship. Helps to see if your shots are short or long.
Ship artilleries can't fire when you're directly heading at the enemy. You have to swing your ship around so that the side of your ship is facing the enemy.
Torpedoes take forever to reload.
You have a finite amount of planes in your hanger, but it's something like 30-40 planes. Once you're out, you're out. So don't go kamikazing at everything.
You can give a unit that you have to another person by selecting it in the map screen. Then click the left stick, choose the person to give it to. Just don't give your base away, then you'll be a spectator. (thanks for giving it back to me, Knot!)
Set your Y-axis for air controls to inverse. Otherwise, pushing on the right stick will make your plane go up instead of dive.
Good points.
When your bombers have released their payload, give them the orders to land. If they make it back they will be rearmed and repaired when you need to call them out again.
If you are in control of the Japanese airfields, you are allowed up to 9 planes up in the air at one time per airfield. They are composed of 3 flight wings of 3 planes each. The default is Zero's (fighters), Katie's (torpedo bombers), and Judy's (dive bombers). You can change the three wings to what ever you wish to do, but once you run out of that type of aircraft you are done (unless someone gives you some units)
In other words, you can launch 3 wings of torpedo bombers or dive bombers or even fighters, depending on your strategy.
While you can use dive bombers to attack ships with bombs, they are better suited to attack bases.

Here's a pretty good guide for the demo.

Here ya go boys and girls. I reformatted some info posted on EIDOS forums into spreadsheet format. Print and keep handy. Not all crafts are in the demo.

Also if you want to see if your bomb or torpedo hit your target after you release it from you plane, hold down the fire button when you release and you will follow the bomb or torpedo. You can keep this view for as long as you hold the trigger down. Down side is your plane could get shot down with out you manuvering it around but you can conferm a hit at least when you want too. I found that if you pull up when dive bombing your bombs of course make an arch and do not land on the target. Aslo you have to be low and at a fairly easy angle to use the torpedo or it will explode in the water on impact.

How to do ship formations. Grabbed from xbox.com
In fact, you can put your ships into formation, first decide which ship you want to lead the formation, then use your map to get the rest of your ships to "follow" that ship(highlight ships you want to follow the lead ship and press A on the "Lead Ship" I do all of this in the map but I believe u could do it in the units its just a little harder). Once you have the rest of your fleet following the lead ship u can set formations, Select the lead ship and go out of the map. Hold the X button and Formation should be on the Down D-PAD, The formations tool is a relatively simple tool to organize where exactly u want your ships to be relitive to your Lead ship, The Faded icon of a ship is where your following ships are now, the not faded ones that u can move is where you want those ships to be. Remember unit speeds tho, if your lead ship is a destroyer and hes at full steam ahead , your Battlships following won't be able to catch up to make the formation. After you've got the formation set up now u can simply give move orders to your lead ship and the rest of the fleet will follow him. Now im not sure if subs can be used this way, as i don't use them that often and i just figured this out last night, I don't see why it wouldn't work tho. Well hope I helped some people set up some dominating fleet Formations. PEACE OUT!

I messed with that a little bit on Friday, but on the demo you are too close to the enemy to make any real good use of it.

I had my destroyers following my carriers in a couple of rounds on the U.S. side to help fend off subs and planes. I usually send them closer to the Japanese airfields and lauch CAP to help with the air defense and send out dive bombers every once in a while to try and take out the airfields. I then send 2 battleships to try to take out the naval base. I find if I concentrate on the naval base and damage control on the battleships I can win with the U.S. if I destroy their naval base first. VonKroll had an interesting tactic in one round as the U.S. and it took longer to take out one of his carriers.
We noticed if you play 2 on 2 and each of you takes an airfield or each takes a shipyard you both get one of each. That seems to be easier and more fun as you get to use both types of units.

I also tested out some tactics yesterday in some pubber games (8 players. no lag!)
I sent a CA and a BB out toward the Japanese shipyards. On the way, they encounter some resistance, if they can make it thru then between those 2, they should be able to take down the shipyards. Then I send them up toward the airfields to arty them. At the same time, I send out 2:1 ratio of bombers:fighters to attack the airfields.
I almost won that battle too. They were down to 1 airfield and 2 subs. I lost everything except 1 carrier. The 2 subs eventually made it to my carrier, so I sent up a Dauntless w/ depth charge. The sub went deep and later resurfaced when I was busy attacking the airfields and it sunk my last carrier. Booo.....

That is the exact tactic I have been using that is ticking people off. I bum rush the shipyards with 2 battleships and send destroyers off to protect the carriers if I am U.S. or send subs after the carriers if I am the Japanese. Once the shipyard is down you I usually take out any of the ships still out and about and then concentrate on the airfield.

I guess people will need to find a strategy to stop the battleship rushes.
