View Full Version : Getting past school blocks

Me and all my classmates have been using proxy servers to play games for years.
Just recently they have blocked all of the actual proxy servers (atleast all the known ones)
Is there any other safe way to get around these filters (without harming the computers)
and before you tell me to do my work...
All of you play games and forum browse for hours at your work.
I only do this in engineering graphics. We have been drawing 3D images sense the beggining of the year, they told me it was CAD.

Any good solutions could be used for those blocked at work TOO :D

They only block the proxy servers they know about. Have someone on the "outside" setup a proxy server for you. :)

Like who?
Or are you suggesting I make a proxy server myself and use it?

Um, I'd use SSH (Secure Shell)
Set up SSH on your home computer... and then get a good light no-install client like putty for school. Set up an encrypted tunnel and route all port 80 traffic (or whatever traffic you want) through the tunnel... effectively making your home computer a secure proxy.
The bonus side of things... if your school network admin is examining network traffic closely (ie: ethereal) he will only see encrypted traffic.. no web traffic, porn, or instant message... whatever.
There are lots of tutorials out there for SSH tunneling... grab one from google and have fun.

Was doing some homework on this kinda thing a few months ago. The situation changed though and I didn't need to finish the research on it.
Multi has the right idea. I was working on something along those lines. SSH tunnel FTW!

Essentially you'd need to setup a proxy server outside your school network, like at a friends house or your parents.
You could also do SSH tunneling to a machine outside your network running SSH and tunnel whatever ports you need through the ssh server machine. I've done this in conjunction with a proxy server and it works great! Either way, you're going to need a machine somewhere outside the school network.

Oh, and on the SSH tunneling thing: I think you can only tunnel TCP. So apps that use UDP (normally streams, video, etc...) might not work.

UDP can be tunneled over SSH.

arn't you forgetting hte important thing though? selling the service to others?
not that i would condone anything like that of course, but you know student-ing is so expensivethese days, and you never seem to have the money you need for those upgrades and stuff.....
just sayin'

If you read through a tutorial (google for "ssh tunneling") then actual setup should take you about 5 minutes... that's accounting for lack of experience.

Not going to tell you to do your work, but in school I only visit wikipedia, Techreport, ESPN, and Anandtech. None of those are blocked! Though they did block tarrif.net for games... Even though there are no games at that site.. oh well...
Um, almost forgot, as an FYI, this post does not contribute anything to this thread.:D
