I'm totally stoked about this upcoming game from Eidos. Heard it's coming out in January for the 360.

WWII Naval battles with big battleships, submarines, and war birds! I seriously can't wait for this game. From all the previews, it is looking like the battels will be huge and chaotic. Looks like fun!

EBGames is listing it being released on 1/30. An Eidos rep, in their forums, said that the demo for 360 will not be out before Xmas. maybe in Jan.

I got to play a few games and its more fun that i expected. Cant wait to get and 8 vs. 8 Wih game going. Oh and i LOVE the Subs. Takes forever to line up a shot but when you send a full load of torpedoes at your target you get the watch them slowly sink into the water and then your off to find your next target. And the Subs have a draw back too... you have to come up for air after a little bit under water and your maneuverability is considerably reduces.

Is the demo single-player only?
edit: answering my own question. This sounds great if we can get some WiHer's on tonite.
Map: Islands of Solomon
Historical Perspective
Japanese forces occupied the Solomon Islands in January 1942. The counter-attack was led by the United States; the 1st Division of the US Marine Corps landed on Guadalcanal and Tulagi in August 1942. Some of the bitterest fighting of World War II took place on the islands for almost three years. Tulagi, the seat of the British administration on the island of Nggela Sule in Central Province was destroyed in the heavy fighting following landings by the US Marines. Then the tough battle for Guadalcanal, which was centred on the capture of the airfield led to the development of the adjacent town of Honiara as the United States logistics centre.

Player 4 – Shipyard with destroyers, cruisers and subs (2 can be launched at any one time)

This demo is very fun if you like this type of gaming.
I played mostly as Japanese tonite. I commanded the airfield and a shipyard. The airfield is cool. I can launch fighters (Zeroes), dive bombers (Judy), torpedo bombers (Kate). I sent up 2 squadrants of Judies escorted by Zeroes. Then sent them toward their targets. The shipyards allow you to build 2 ships at any given time. Depending on the class of ship, it'll have artillery, flak guns, AA guns, torpedoes, depth charges, etc... You can assume control of any units at any time. Or you can just command the battle and let the computer control each units.
Later in the nite, me, a coworker, and PIcklex fought against 4 other guys. I had the airfield and shipyard, Pickle had another airfield, coworker had shipyard. I led all Zeroes in the air blocking all attempts at bombing any of our assets. I just send in my Zeroes and watch them do their work. Sent a destroyer out to sink their 2 carriers. Pickles sent in Judies and Kates against the carriers as well. Once their carriers are down, we control the air. So we sent waves of dive bombers and several ships to their shipyards and laid waste to everything.
An excellent demo indeed. But it's not some problems. ONe time a player dropped and the game locked up for everyone. also, I can set reserved slots for friends, but after the battle, friends don't auto-join the lobby. I have to re-invite after each battle.
I'm looking forward to playing more of the demo along with more WiH'ers.

yeah, we had fun playing Kernel and I versus you three. We held our own till knot brought out that damn sub, it killed us (literally). I couldn't figure out how to hit him. My torpedos were too high in the water, and when ever I went over the top of him to drop depth charges I lost my unit (I think I may have been ramming him  ). Once I learned about giving orders and setting personnel to certain positions, it got a little easier. Not sure how to destroy your bases with our ships though (artillery?).
Not sure how to destroy your bases with our ships though (artillery?).
That is exactly how you do it, you can either target the base using the reticule, a button (to lock target) , x button to give it orders to attack.
Or you could use the map screen, move the target indicator to target and then press the a button (attack).

That was a blast Drayu. I actually had 2 subs out and that is all I played for most of that match. Everytime you passed over me I dove to avoid whatever you sent my way. I eventaully ran out of torps and had to surface to hit the Yorktown with the arty gun on my deck. I think someone did sink one of my subs because that is when I built my Crusier to rush and kill the last naval base. That Cruiser took a pounding from you I had to keep assigning crews to handle damage but eventually it was so close I just laid it out there. I was amazed how much abuse those carriers took from my torpedos. Kernel was frustrating me with his manuvers he kept avoiding the torpedos so I just started putting 6 at a time out. Great fun I want play again and hopefully get a 4 vs 4 going all WIH as they are less likely to smack talk if they kick are butt.

did I hit you at all when you were submerged? I was able to see you underwater, but none of my torps hit you when I was the destroyer class, and none would hit you when I was a sub. Just not sure how to sink a sub other than with depth charges, but whenever I got close (even with a fresh ship) I would die as soon as I passed over you and let some charges go. I also didn't like that you needed to be up for all of 3 secs to fill your oxygen before submerging again.

I don't think the depth charges ever were close enough to do damage but I did see them dropping in front of me. Maybe you need to set depth on them and we haven't figured that out yet. The only thing that hit my sub was fire from deck guns when I surfaced. I didn't even realize why the sub was surfacing on it's own. I would just resubmerge right away so I don't think I was filling my oxygen completely. I think the reason you may have gone down is I was firing so many torpedos I know I saw cross their path and take a few.

You can also send planes out with depth charges to attack the subs. For the shipyards and airfields, you can artillery them or send in bombers to do the work. But they're full of AA guns around them.
On one of the pubber battles, one of my Japanese cruisers was just almost dead, it was half way under water and tilting to one side. I sent it in against a carrier as a distraction. Then sent a big battleship with a bunch of cannons to flank the carrier and destroying it. Then one of their subs took out my battleship bc it didn't have any depth charges and I was the last on my team, so no calling for help.
I think it would be so awesome to get 8 players we know to play. Then everyone will have a mic and won't drop when they get their asses kicked.

I wish this had single player so I could learn stuff. I found it pretty complicated when I briefly played it. The demo explains absolutely nothing to you.
I did quick match, and some English guy was in charge of my team. By team I mean me and him. I picked a player type and I chose naval because I thought it would be kinda cool to work the big guns.
But then the game started and I was looking at an empty shipyard. In a demo, that does not impress much. He was asking me to make destroyers...nothing is really labeled. I just messed around until I made two boats. Then, I couldn't figure out how to steer them. Once I figured that out (by the way, steering ships is not as exciting as it sounds....and it sounds boring....) there were planes trying to bomb me. I got out my AA Flak, but it didn't do anything at all...the guns made noise, but I didn't see much flak exploding. I don't know if I killed any planes or if it was all the English guy.
Then there were other boats, and my only other weapon was "artillery". So I tried shooting that...nothing. No explosions, no spashing in the water, nothing.
Then, thankfully, my controller died and I was able to escape the tedium of slowly steering a ship while doing absolutely nothing.
Now, that isn't to say this is a bad game...but I could really use a tutorial. Not some English guy telling me to "make a ship, any ship" while he is trying to concentrate on shooting down enemy planes. If a SP demo comes out I will definitely try that.

Okay, after getting a leetle bit of schoolin', the game seems cooler. The pace is...slow. Slower than glass.
I am very torn on it...on the one hand, it has some really cool moments...being in a sub, sneaking underneath the enemy boats, hearing their sonar ping you while they try to drop depth charges on you...that's cool.
On the other hand, the graphics would barely pass muster for the PS2...first gen. I'm not a total graphics whore (still haven't bought Gears of War), but these graphics are so bad it pulls me out of the game. No particle effects. Terrible explosions...you "blow up" the enemy shipyards and all it does is show a little flame...you sink a boat, and that is ALL...it just sinks.
If I sink a boat, I want something COOL. I want to see explosions, and secondary explosions as the ammo storage/fuel tanks go up...I want to see oil cover the water and the boat starts sinking...I want to see pieces of debris falling off...instead the boat just sinks. Yay.
It's really hard to get into the game when it looks so terrible.
But then I think of how cool larger battles with tons of people would be....
Sigh. Dammit.
Any word on how big the battles will be in the final version? As in, how many players? I could probably forgive the graphics if they sucked because I got to play 16v16 matches.
But if it stops at like 4 on 4...damn.
Knottwobad
01-20-2007, 09:21 AM
My understanding is there is only going to be eight possible in the actual. I think they are limited on graphics because of how much they have going on with all of the activities you can perform. Anymore graphic explosions might send it off the charts impossible for some with horrid connections to play. Then again it may be that this is just the demo and the graphics will be better in the game. I did see some big explosions and ships olling over before sinking so it was all that bad. This is definitely one I will buy, this is just one map, I would love to see the other 11 they have.
Drayu
01-20-2007, 11:05 AM
I think this one will be more about the gameplay than the graphics.
I agree completely. I never gave the graphics a thought, I was just looking at the game play solely.
They do need to make some changes with player interaction. It would be nice if you had something else to do once your units are wiped out. There is no chat, other than talking with your teammates who are still battling, it gets very boring waiting for the match to end.

My thought on graphics is that they shouldn't be an afterthought. Honestly, this looks like a $20 budget game. It isn't rewarding to sink a ship at all...it just sinks below the water, hurray. I realize there are some explosions in the game. But you can't tell me the graphics would FUBAR the gameplay online...I see you guys on Gears of War all the time, and tell me THOSE graphics suck.
I do understand that "it's about the gameplay". But if the overall package of a game includes: Gameplay, Graphics, Audio, User Interface, and a few other items, you can't expect me to pay $60 for one good and the others bad.
But those sons of bitches have me somehow wanting to play more now. Dammit. :)

I think that because it is a new genre of game, the graphics are not as important. However if this was a run of the mill BF2 clone, then yes I would be expecting more in the graphics department.

I got mine too. I have to agree with WihAdmin on the Naval academy but I did learn a couple of things about controlling ships and targeting in it. I have been playing rookie campaign and it may be a little to easy but I wanted to feel it out before moving on to the harder modes. I tried the first of each of the challenges a couple of times and they are tough. I got almost through the ship challenge and the sub challenge only to get sunk at the moment I was setting up for my final run to win the challenge. The plane challenge I tried once and did not come close. I was trying to figure out if there is truly a co-op multiplayer but I didn't see anything that told me it was possible to play against the AI. Still pretty fun and time flew by while playing it. I took the Friday and Monday off to play and watch the Super Bowl so I will be playing pretty late into the night tonight if someone wants to try multiplayer out.

Good luck with that Gorro, a friend of mine was trying to get one yesterday in stores and most of them were sold out already. He got lucky and was able to get one at the local Gamestop. Although I think he said the Best Buys around here told him they were not even getting them until today so you might get lucky.

I am playing on Regular mode. I almost made it thru the mission where I had to take my Destroyer thru the gauntlet. Those little japanese boats are everywhere. Looking forward to getting control of more of the fleet.

That is also why I am playing rookie, because on regular it would probably take me much longer. I was able to get through gauntlet on rookie mode.

we've had multiple crashes trying to start LAN games. single player is fine... join a LAN and you're screwed.

I finshed the campaign on rookie mode and he last couple of missions get pretty difficult. I also was able to finsh the first plane challenge and the frist 2 sub challenges. The last sub challenge seems impossible and the second plane challenge is very tough. The first ship challenge is very tough, I have tried it mulitple times. There must be a trick to it.

I heard a rumor that if you complete all the Secret missions, a Japanese campaign will open up. I have not been able to verify the source of this yet.

NO lock ups here. I'm up the mission where I lead 2 ships: a destroyer and a cruiser I think.
Wow single player campaign was kinda short. Hopefully there will some d/l content soon. Off to play the challenges now.
Wow, that first ship challenge is damn near impossible! I tried making a straight shot toward the evac point, I tried duking it out and I also tried circumventing. But I keep losing to them final 3 battleships.

Yep the first ship one is really tough. I still haven't been able to beat it. I have tried a run straight for safety and taking out the destroyers. In each case I end up with the going down. I have been trying to find some sort of strategy guide but it's still to early. The last sub one seems impossible too. I have to sink the Enterprise and am given 2 subs to do it. I get within 1.0 of it and both my subs are getting wasted by depth charges from destroyers and PT boats.

Yeah, I'm a little dissapointed with how short it was. AND I didn't feel there were too many MASSIVE fleet battles.

So i still havent bought it. Is it worth it or should I just screw the idea?
Man, that 3 plane challenge is tough. You have to destroy 2 battleships, it has a carrier and 2 destroyers protecting them.
You have 2 airfields, but all you have are fighters, medium bombers, and heavy bombers.
I am thinking you have to take out the carrier and it fighters first with fighters and med bombers, then go after the destroyer with the same mix, then go with heavys after the BB's.
I am ready to give up on this one.
I get that last battle ship down to 2/3 but he keeps escaping.
I send 4 flights of fighters to take on their 4 flights, I send 4 med bombers to drop bombs on carrier.
I send 1 to 2 more units of fighters to mop other fighters. Then I send in wave after wave of torpedo bombers. I tried taking out destroyers, but I think that is a waste of time, while it does help with reduced AA, you run out of time.
Just not enough map to finish that last battle ship. :dunno:
Ok, finally beat the plane challenge.

So did you attack the carrier right away or go after the defending ships and PT boats first Ichix?
I tried going after the carrier first, but always got taken out by the pt boats. Especially seeing it takes 5 torps to take out the carrier.
I took out the south destroyer first then went after the pt boat.
For the pt boat I surfaced and using the cannon. All the can do is launch torpedoes at you if you surface, but you have to watch out and make sure the destroyer or cruiser is not too close, other wise they will shell you.
I lost my southern sub after taking out the destroyer and damaging one of the pt boats to about 1/3 of health. There is one catalina with depth chargers and one flight of 3 dive bombers with depth chargers.
I sent my northern sub NE so he could do a head on attack to the carrier. I surfaced to engage the first PT boat that patrolled the northern area.
after that I went towards the carrier. There is still a destroyer and a pt boat guarding it. So I went after the cruiser and as soon as I went for him the destroyer came after me. I changed course for a head on with the destroyer, sunk him and then went to chase the cruiser. After the cruiser went down I surfaced and went after pt boat by the carrier, the other pt boat that was damaged came after me as well, but they both fell under the arty. As soon as I turned towards the carrier it started to head for the edge of the map. By this point I had only 6 torps lefts 4 in the front and 2 in the back. That arty cannon does crap to the carrier, I hit him with my 4 front torps, and his speed dropped real bad, got in front of him and finished him off the 2 rear ones.
That battleship mission is F#$@^%, I don't see how you can do it.
By the time I get to the last battleship I am to damaged to fight. It would not be too bad, if they didn't spawn 1.9 miles away and before you destroy the last ship.

Well I finally got past that 1st ship challenge. I did what they said and this time it actually worked. I was able to spot and start firing early enough to take out 2 of the 3 first destroyers before they could fire their torps. I think the big issue was before I wasn't leading them enough when the were approching me head on. I even got a couple of 1 shot kils on the the destroyers. The big thing is to take out the destroyers first and there are 14 total and 2 cruisers and 3 battleships. Once I had only the battleships left I had 3/4 health and that helped me survive there attack and take them out with the help of the other battleship that comes to your aid. I personally took 10 of the destroyers, 2 crusiers, and 2 battleships. Wow that was some challenge.
The next one is tough as well you need to take out the heavy crusier Houston with your own heavy cruiser and 2 destroyers. The Houston has buddies in front in the form of 6 destroyers and 2 other cruisers (1 heavy and 1 light). I got through all but the last 2 destroyers and the Houston until my cruiser sank which ended the game because your cruiser must survive to win the challenge.
I finally completed all of the ship challenges last night.
For the second one I changed my formation to a "V" with my main in the rear and the other 2 in front. that way they would take the brunt of the damage.

I finally finished the last sub challenge. I decided to leave the eastern sub unused fro the begining and dropped him down to level 3. I took the southern one to the surface and headed NW to draw the PT boats, destroyers, cruisers and planes into battle. The planes drop DC on me and damaged it half way but I shot down the PBY. Then came the 1st PT boat and I took him out with arty. By this time I could see the S destroyer heading straight for me. I dove to persicope and turned straight at him and launched 4 torps and sank him. I saw another PT boat heading for me and surfaced adn took him out as well. After I finished him off I spotted the cruiser bearing down on me and opening up. I tried to dive but I was to late they sank mty southern sub. I headed the other sub for the carrier at the surface and came accross the 3rd PT boat I took him out just in time to have the other destroyer make a run for me. I turned into him and nailed him with 4 from my front. Then came the cruiser again this time he was running from me and I launched about everything I had at him but he kept evading my torps. I decided to leave him be and go for the carrier and lauched at close range with my 2 ramining front torps and hit with one and then tried my last 2 rear and hit one which left the carrier with about 90% hp left. I had no choice but to surface and use my arty. I made sure to try and keep the carrier between me and the cruiser for as long as I could and kept firing the arty. I eventually sunk the carrier with the arty just as the cruisers shots started landing by my sub. I may ahve to try that one again to try and get the cruiser as well since it was a secondary. I have to say if you can eliminate the pt boats and destoyers early you will have a much easier time.
