Its a book driven game like old D&D only its with lots of people online. Though i am not sure how its run. Would think someone made a dice program so that no one could cheat on their rolls.
Ahh yes, ye olde RP. If its the kind I'm thinking it is, RP is a text-based game you play out in chat rooms 'n such. They've got all sorts of RP rooms on AOL. My fiancee RPs Legend of Zelda stuff. Its sort of like participating in an interactive story. Fun if you got cool players and like to write.
EDIT: Lol forgot the different types you could find, yeah there's dice-based RP on aol, but a lot of that's looked down upon by other RPers, my fiancee does a descriptive turn-based style where logic (!?!) determines how attacks work. She says its like chess rather than chance. All my buds like the dice-based stuff more though. (Frankly, I do it too because I can only count the times a good, solid, desc. logic fight went down w/o any drama on one hand).
I used to RP Resident Evil stuff myself, lol been meanin' to give it a try on forums w/ Persephone, never did get around to it though eh heheh ^^;

If you are interested in D&D and playing it online... check out http://dndnonlinegames.com which is where you use their on site dice rollers to execute the game mechanics, dungeon masters manage the game, and you type out text to describe your characters actions in game.

Ok. So RP'ing with computers as a medium for interaction. There are two ways that I've RP'd online, and they're both drastically different.
---
The first: MU*'s (Multi User [insert extension here] interactive game) - These are realtime-ish text based multi user RP's and can be similar to MMORPGs (those classified as Multi User Dungeons [MUDs]) or can be much more in line with traditional no-stats acting RP (those classified as Multiuser Object Oriented dungeons [MOOs]), plus everything inbetween. All of these take place over Telnet, and generally it's advisable that you get a telnet client to join, simply because raw telnet is absolutely terrible for interacting with several people in this manner.
When it comes to actually roleplaying out a scenario in a MU*, you basically type up short (or long winded) paragraphs displaying your actions for everyone else to read. MU*s similar to MMORPGs generally have an automated combat system and levelling system, all text based.
For more info on telnet-based MU*s, checkout http://www.mudconnector.com

The second type of online RP I've participated in is message board RP, or novelist's RP in my opinion. This can be seen as similar to a long distance game of chess with no time limit. Each player makes their move and has to wait for the other players to first read the original player's move and then to move themselves.
Because this is not done in real time (unless you and everyone else playing are incredibly fast typers with unlimited imagination) each player generally has to write up significant portions describing their roleplay actions for each turn (anywhere from a few paragraphs to a page or three of pure imaginative description). I for one never had this type of creative writing ability, and failed to take message board RP very far.
Don't have any links for this, only played this way once with my cousin and some of his friends.

I have done PBP for a very long time and you are right, a good game master will force you to be very detailed in your responses and they are often very long. :)

Heh, coming from telnet MU*s, it's such a difference that I wasn't able to adapt. It's amazing how many different ways there are to RP.

You'll need an admin to install a dice roller for this forum first.

Yeah, this is the kind of RP my fiancee does, only she does it real-time in chatrooms with multiple people and sometimes controlling multiple characters (each with their own different personality and character traits) >.< And yeah she describes it the same way (like chess). Nuts, imo, she's not even that interested in penning a novel.

Persephone is not very proud of this but from the age of like..12 to around..16? I used to role play. Lawl! Yeah on AOL there was under the 'Arts and Entertainment' section 'Member Made Chatrooms' and EVERYONE there role played. Yep..

I used to RP on an old chat room/forum, medieval/fantasy style with futuristic elements. We had a unique fighting system that didn't require dice, but it was all real-time, so.
Anwyay, it worked like.. Well, honor system. Someone would throw out an attack such as :
*Daemon raises his waraxe to his shoulders, examining his prey with his slivered eyes, as he slips his foot forward and then swings his axe towards his opponents neck, hoping to catch his opponent before he has time to react.* (insert more detail.)
*Krystal examines her opponent, watching his moves with an ever cautious eye, slowly moving her hands to her twin daggers on her belt, and then, after letting her eyes off for a second, she falls back as the axe grazes her neck, drawing both her daggers and rolling to the right.... etc etc.*
But there is no dice required, but simply the realism-element of, what you can acctually avoid/dodge/etc when said action occurs. Things such as insta-hits and all were called later by the older members 'modes' and were dismissed and the player had to redo their turn.

I was once involved in a group that used IRC for the more realtime RPing. Participated in a few PBP. Attended a local convention and was forever hooked on the pen and paper. It truly is the best. There's something about realtime. PBP is great for reading though as the actions and whole story are usually more elaborate and well writting. Now every wednesday I host a pen and paper D&D game at my krib.
