This thread is to talk about the Nintendo Wii for like me and StevenNevets bc I think we're the only 2 people buying this console. Anyone else is welcome to comment too, just leave the fanboy attitude at the door step.

In any case, anyone have any links of Wii sites where I can read up on which accessories and games to buy on launch day (which is this coming Sunday)?

you can play the n64 games and such on it too and nintendo does have some good games... unfortunatly my family do not play enough games to justfiy a new console the ps2 is fine, besides the eldest spends more time on myspace then playing games and my wife hogs the only tv in the house the rest of the time *L*

i certainly do not think it will have as many bugs or compatibility issues as the 360 or ps3 had nintendo do seem to be very fastidious with their releases

I'm buying this to have something to play with my son. He's 2. He loves to just watch me play the 360 and the PC games, but those aren't exactly kid-friendly games, especially Gears of War or Dead Rising.

I figured with the simple fun games, easy to pick up controller, coupled with the motion sensing controller, it'll be fun to teach and for him to play. I am looking forward to the included Wii Sports game. Maybe pick up Elebits game later when it is released. CoD3 sounds interesting on the Wii where you use the motion controller to point and shoot.

For me, I'm looking forward to being able to play some Tgfx16 games. They had some of the best 2D horizontal and vertical shooters around in the day.

Games to look for at launch:
The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess (It's Zelda - one of the best series ever - this looks like it may actualy top OOT)
Red Steel (Best FPS at launch, first good shooter with the Wii controlls)
Madden NFL 07 (Pretty good graphics, another game where the controllers make a huge differnce)
Rayman Raving Rabbids (not a big Raymen fan but the graphics are 360 like)
Excite Truck (Best launch racing game, kind of simple and exagerated physics but will be fun, expecialy multi-player)

There are many other games but I have my doughts for various reasons.

Games to look for soon-ish:
Mario Party 8 (a blast when playing with friends and family)
Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (it's Metroid and bound to be good)
Sonic and the Secret Rings (hmm, I hope this game as it was with Genisus)
Super Mario Galaxy (right up there with Zelda - this game should beat Sunshine no problem, not sure about N64/Snes though - the game is 2 player co-op!)
Super Smash Bros. Brawl (Looks as promising as the rest of the series - this game will be playable online too!)

Intersting facts about the Wii (off the top of my head)

Is backwords compatible with Gamecube games/controllers - yes, even Wavebirds fit snug/memory cards
Nintendo will be sending updates for pretty much anything Wii related - if you are connected to the internet of course
Many games will be playable online and they should be free
Nintendo has created a new idea called "Virtual Console" in which you can download old school games (N64/Snes/Nes/Sega/Turbographix (or something) and maybe a couple others)... only certain games will be available at first but more games will be added to the selection each month... BUT there is a charge per game (depends on what system)
Wii has many capabilitys behinds games - check the official site

Check out the link to the reviews for the Wii sports. That's something that anyone can pick up and play for short periods of time. That's the primary reason why I'm getting a Wii. Accessibility to easy intuitive games for my son and wife.

i think what annoys me about all this is the fact i spent hours and hours back in the dialup days and broken links and chasing crap around to get working emulators and roms for all my favourite games on all the consoles, and now a console has them all... not to mention the likes of gametap...

though i did see an old genesis at the local thrift store with controller and power for like $3 brought back some found memories....

I'll definitely be picking one of these up. Though I don't know how much luck I'll have since my local Gamestop was only taking pre-orders for it for about 12 minutes before running out. Hopefully before years end I'll have mine.

I'm pretty sure I'll be getting a Wii, but I dunno whether to get it at a store on release day, or get it on overstock.com with the 10% off coupon: http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?siteID=Es5Ekr9eEBk-68vwdRy_kONt5OSbTqgl0Q&PAGE=STATICPAGE&PAGE_ID=2645&cid=103558&fp=F

A Wii + 1 game will end up at around $275 on overstock (if they have any Wii's) vs. the $320 I'd pay in a store... but then I might have to wait a couple week to play it. I'm so conflicted, lol.

StevenNevets
11-15-2006, 02:50 PM

Went to a local mall for lunch. Nintendo had a small area set up with 6 Wii units playing Wii Sports. I got to try out tennis. Pretty cool! There's a slight delay between me swinging the controller and the onscreen action. After a few minutes, eye hand co-ordination kicked in and I didn't notice the delay any more.

Nope. All they had was Wii Sports. Each Wii was demoing a different sport, with the 6th Wii playing some sort of Wii marketing video. The people there said they work for a marketing group that's hired by Nintendo to demo the console until Jan.

scoped out some local stores on the Wii-lease tomorrow.

Walmart (not 24/7) opens at 6A, no line, no clue how many units.
Best Buy opens at 9A, already a line w/ 6 people at noon Sat, expecting 102 units according to posted sign from Best Buy on the door.
Fry's Electronics opens at 9A (I think?), no line, no clue how many units, but must be purchased as bundles including extra controller and 1 or more games.
Target opens at 8A, no line, 60 units.

Best Buy had some games available for purchase. About 5-6 copies each game. So i picked up Rayman and Trauma Center, just in case I do get my hands on a Wii tomorrow. No accessories out yet.

I have the Wii. In the middle of updating it via Internet. Strange, it doesn't like it when my router's MAC filtering is on, even though I gave my router the Wii's MAC address before hand. I had to turn off MAC filtering in order for the Wii to connect.

I got mine at Target this morning. Went there around 4A and camped out until 7A for a ticket to buy a unit. I was #47 out of 60. Target had minimal games and accessories. No extra controllers were available. I just paid for the Wii and drove down to Best Buy. Huge line at Best Buy. Luckily, when Best Buy opened, they allow those who aren't buyng the console to go in first. I was able to grab several controllers.

As for games, I picked up Rayman: Raving Rabbids and Trauma Center: Second Opinion.

ooooo.. FInally finished updating. My wife is creating a Mii for me.

wihadmin

Played all the Wii Sports games in single and 2-player with my wife. Wow! They are fun and definitely break a sweat if you actually do the real motions. I liked Bowling, Tennis, Baseball, Golf, and Boxing. Out of those, boxing had the worst motion sensing. The rest, especially Bowling worked like a charm. You can put spins on the bowling ball and you can slice or top-spin your tennis balls. Good stuff.

Taking a break and then gonna play some Rayman.

I've never been an adventure/RPG gaming fan. The thought of a game like Zelda taking 40-60 hours to finish scares me bc I don't have that kind of time to put into it. Something like Gears of War which takes 8-10 hours is my kinda game.

For me, if I can get the wii next week, I doubt I will get Zelda immediatly. First of all, sports should be pretty fun and could keep me preoccupied until I do get Zelda. Second, I also wouldnt get it just to save cash. If I have to get another controller for my brother then I would have to wait, especially since it will be up to 80 dollars canadian with tax for the controller.

rayman is fun. I've only played the first 4 mini-games so far. Cow tossing was fun! Twirl the wiimote and let go of button when you want to release the cow. I think there's like 70 mini-games total. I haven't even scratched the surface.

Trauma Center is pretty cool. I've completed the first 4 operations removing shards of glass from motorcyclist that ran into a store front. Then operated on a patient with some tumors. The wiimote is used very intuitively. I have access to scapel, anti-biotic spray, suction, thread & needle, laser, ultrasound, at my disposal to use. Cool game!

All in all,  for the Nintendo Wii and the games I have. Well worth the 4 hours of waiting in line.

i havent gotten a chance to play the wii yet, but i dont understand how everyone loses their grip on it. Do you lube the controller before playing? or do you really have to wave it around with such force just in order to play? You're never required to make realistic, drastic, crazy movements (simple wrist movements work fine) but it kind of ruins the point. Atleast with Wii Sports, pretty much every other game you'll be sitting down.

No I don't think anyones lubes the controller. Maybe Fozzys son had lube on his hands before playing. Don't know.:dunno:

You don't "HAVE" to wave it around forcefully to play.........it just kind of happens. you get really into the game, and OOPS there goes the controller. :D

I have never thrown the controller, but I completely understand how it could happen.

I insist that everyone who plays wears the wrist strap. It's easy to slip on and it is a lot better then having the controller hit my new 46" LCD TV!!! Because if it did I would be like :angryfire: and then I would :smack: whom ever did it!!!

But Tiger Woods is coming out soon.

The fishing game out right now sucks from what I heard but it's up to you.

There is two golf games Tiger Woods and Super Swing Golf. Super Swing Golf is out already on BestBuy and Tiger Woods Golf should be out tomorrow.

And ya Tiger Woods tommorow, it looks decent.

lol. My brother and his wife are going on vacation and let me borrow their wii. So I'm entering my character's name in Zelda Twilight Princess and my cursor was on one side of the screen and the next letter was on the other side and I don't know if it was force of habit or because my brain was not in its unaltered state, but I tried going to the other side by motioning off the screen away from the side I wanted to go to, like in pac-man or that mini game in super mario bros. 3

thank you, thank you.

Now, can someone tell me how to make the shooting and slashing noises come from the TV's speakers instead of the one on the wiimote?
