In the least surprising news category it looks like the PS3s are having a bunch of problems with backwards compatability. Over 200 PS2 and PS games do not work on the PS3.
I'm a PS enthusiast, but as the months have worn on I have really begun to doubt this system. Sure it is technically the most powerful console ever to hit the market, but it seems like Sony has bit off more than they can chew and I'm thinking this may be the first of many technical issues for this system. It looks like the PS3 is going to be an expensive high maintenance console.
Before I was going to purchase as soon as I could get my hands on one. Now I will be waiting at least 3-4 months before deciding on what to do. I might just buy a stand alone HD-DVD (As early indications seem to show that it is superior to Blue-Ray) and save up the rest of my money for upgrades on my computer.

i am seeing it though as a small problem, with the hardware already there all they need is either a firmware or a software update like the 360 and it should work pretty well hell the ps2 did not play all the ps1 games all the time... i think you are right though in wating i will be waiting a good year before considering a purchase

Here is my thought- the PS3 doesn't do anything for me that my 360 doesn't do.
Right now, there isn't any compelling software for the PS3 that I want. Frankly, I don't see anything coming down the pipe for it that I just hafta have.
So I won't buy one.
In a year or two, when prices have dropped, and there is a lot of good software out, maybe a game will be announced that I really want. Maybe if Gran Turismo finally allows damage and customization. Or maybe if they finally released a good sequel to Bushido Blade.
Until then, my spendin' cash will keep going towards my car :)

I have both the PS2 and the Xbox when they were both current gen consoles. I played everything on the Xbox bc of the online feature of that console. I hardly touched my PS2 other than for some rhythm games like Amplitude, Frequency, Guitar Hero, DDR, etc...
Currently, I'm very happy with the 360. With their recent release of the HD-DVD drive for $199, I don't think I'll be getting a PS3 any time soon. There's nothing for the PS3 that I want. Even Guitar Hero 2 is coming out for the 360 next spring.
Before I'm called a fanboy, let me say that I don't think I am bc I made logical decisions after evaluating the info for the systems. A fanboy is someone completely devoted to only 1 choice over others due to their unwillingness to acknowledge the competition.

The main compelling feature of the PS3 is the ability to play all of the games from PS1 to PS2.
If that doesn't work, then :dunno:
I'm still up in the air on both consoles, mainly due to the huge amount of $$$$ involved.
Guess I'll wait and see.

Amen! I just got a xbox 360 and I spent at least two months before that deciding if i really wanted an 360 or a ps3, and 360 is cheaper there are a lot of games out already, i already have an xbox so there are more games that i can play without buying. And I'm not a fanboy either cuase i have a super nintendo which i still get a kick out of everyonce in a while, super mario world is really fun!

Between the PS3 and the 360? I think the PS3 technical specs has more potential, according to the press. Supposedly it's technically more capable than the 360, assuming ideal conditions. From the development houses, via various magazine articles, blogs, online articles and forums, the 360 is easier to develop for vs the PS3. That doesn't mean that they won't master the PS3 6 months later and crank out better games.
An interesting note about the PS3 is that I'm not hearing or reading about their online plans. It seems like they're really downplaying the online community, if there is going to be one, for the PS3. That in itself is a huge disappointment for me bc most of my games (pc and console) are played online with the WiH folks.

That's funny. I got an xbox and skipped the ps2 and im happy i did because i would play a game on the ps2 at my friends house, then play the same game on the xbox and the xbox version always looked so much better, less jagged. hell, i thought vice city on xbox looked better than san andres on ps2 and san came out a good bit of time after vice. maybe it's just me? i dont know how it will be on the 360/ps3 cycle since ps3 is coming out after the 360 whereas the xbox came out after the ps2. :dunno:

Monkey see monkey do. That is why the came out with the PS3 a year later. Im a PS junkie. I was not too fawn of the xbox. The game I was really amazed with the xbox was LORD OF THE RING(return of the king). Man, the freaking game rocked.

the ps2 was the least powerful of the last gen of consoles, (it shouldna;t have been but it was) but it was the most successful... the games near the end of it's life ( like now) push it to new limits and new effects history has shown us that programmers do not like a complicated machine to program for though, the jaguar was a prime example being 2 cpus they developers hated it as it was much more complicated to deisgn games for...
in my book it comes down to a ps3 or a vista copy, an i think i have a contact to get vista at a very low price... so i guess eventually it will be a ps3, i really do not care as long as it is black white looks so GHEY in my entertain, ent center with black everyhting else*L*

The XBox was considered the more powerful of the two consoles, but PS2 already had a large installed base of games including some very powerful brands. (MGS, Final Fantasy, Madden etc) Despite this, XBox's first attempt at a console was considered successful given that it came out later and had less to work with. Now XBox has many of the same brands including some that PS does not have (Halo for example). This time Xbox is in the position Sony was in with the PS2 in that it came out earlier, is not quite as advanced but has a loyal set of customers.
Sony really does appear to be in a hole because none of the things that the PS3 is offering appears to be the absolute killer app that they are hoping for. The technology they are using is so new that it could be prone to technical problems and they have priced themselves ridiculously high. Sony execs would be quick to come back with "Yes but it is more advanced and comes with a Blue Ray DVD player". I think this is a mistake though, they now put themselves in the situation where they are hoping to get customers who want both a console AND a high def DVD player. First of all the market for high def DVDs is hardly huge, it will undoubtedly grow as more movies are shot in HD, but right now we're not even sure Blue Ray will become the player of choice....Betamax all over again. Lets not forget that it appears Sony could be missing the online gaming boat...AGAIN!
I was a huge fan of PS and I will miss playing Final Fantasy but I cannot justify paying $700+ for a console that has so many doubts.

I read in a magazne that they're doing the same thing as they did with the ps2, so the developers make thier own and can charge if they want or not, so its not good because it can be laggy, have virus's, be hacked, because depending on the developer they could just create the online system and not improve it, or fix it when its down or something.

that puzzles me. Sony must have seen the success of Xbox Live. But yet they won't address that topic with the PS3. For someone like me, given a game that I can buy on the 360 or the PS3, the 360 will have the edge bc of the integration with Live for online gaming.
Do they not have the infrastructure to handle online gaming? Does it cost too much money for them?

Boy... just got off work earlier today and the PS3 craze is absolute freaking CHAOS. By The Way... Best Buy now has display/demos of the PS3 in action, pretty wild. I was playing like NBA Live or something on it right before I left. The controller is almost IDENTICAL to the PS2 controller except that the L2/R2 buttons roll back when you hit them instead of suppresing straight down like they do with the PS2.
As for online... Sony has kinda believed in itself that it didn't need an online system to be huge, but it'll definately have a great online setup. The PS3 has full web browsing capabilities, though it does have limited memory capacity(for like flash videos), as well as music player and such. Everyone expects Sony to copy XBox Live, but why do that? Why not attempt to carve a new path and re-invent online play? Sony is smart enough to go a different route. Obviously, XBox Live was a huge hit, so that's what people are looking for... but Sony's version will work fluidly and be user-friendly.
BTW: If your planning on camping out at Best Buy for a PS3... each store will get around 20 - 30 systems. So if you show up and there's 40 people in front of you... I'd recommend going to another store and seeing what you can find.

There was a huge confrontation about it as I left. People were wanting to line up, but corporate said we had to kick everyone out and couldn't let anyone line up till midnight tonight. Then we got some new A-Hole chik that works up at loss prevention(the yellow shirts at the door) and she was telling people to start lining up... so then people got mad because some were told to go home while others were lining up.
So what we said was that we couldn't allow them to 'officially' line up, but they could wait behind the store in their cars till midnight and then come out and start lining up at the door. We got our drop shipment of PS3's in today... 26 of them. When I first saw one of the systems in the display, I was like 'Ohhhhh Myyyy Gawd', it just looks like it's a tough system. It's fairly big, about 1 and'a half of the original PS2's, but it looks like it'll dominate.

Ah yeah. The first actual system I've heard of sold on Ebay like last night for around $3400 I believe. It's unbelievable, but people are willing to put up big bucks instead of waiting a few more weeks.

If you can get one at all, let alone without a line I will be floored. I have been on waiting lists to get one for over 6 months and I have been unable to. It is literally impossible here to get ahold of one in any way shape or form. That's why I estimate they will be selling for an average range of 3000-3500 on ebay for the first 6 weeks.

Oh, they'll be lines. Here's what I would do if I were you though.
Go to Best Buy tomorrow morning around 6am and count how many people are in line. If you count around 22 or less people, then get in line. The store won't open till around 9am or 10am... sure it's a 3-4 hour wait, but I have no problem waiting a whole 3 hours to make $2500 in pure profit.

There was already a mini-riot in a Walmart in SoCal (Palmdale) over the PS3. For whatever reason last nite, a large crowd started to run thru Walmart toward the Electronics Dept. They were knocking everything and everyone over. The store called the Sheriff Dept and when they showed up, they cleared out the store. On the way out, more things were busted up and knocked over. Everyone was told to disperse or they'll be arrested for unlawful congregation or something like that. Eventually, the people wanting a PS3 was allowed to form a line outside of the store...

I agree. It is going to be an impossibility to get in line now. You might be able to pay someone in line for their spot and then buy the PS3. Assuming you can get them to give up their spot for a "reasonable" price you could still make some money.

I've decided to hold off for a while before buying it. I was actually going to camp out but after playing it, Im going to hold off. It looks great but I dont think it worth the amount of money there charging for it. I rather get a new graphics card and get my money's worth.

Here's a small tip...
All Best Buy's Are Getting AT LEAST 26 Systems. My store only got 26, and we have about 32 campers outside the store waiting. Four of our employee's are camped out, one of them bought a 1200 watt inverter and parked his truck next to the tent. Their hookin up their laptop and projecting a DVD on the side of the wall for all the watch.
