You might remember I was testing Vista. I got tired of NOTHING working (no blames, all the drivers were betas and stuff!). So I went back to XP.

But I have a problem. When I went from XP -> Vista, I used the "Files and Settings Transfer Wizard". It took all my useful files, and turned them into one big file.

When I started Vista, Vista unpacked that big file into all the original files. It worked just fine. It also left the original big file on the alternate hard drive. I thought that was cool, because I knew I'd switch back eventually and I wanted all those files right where they were.

Now that I re-installed XP, it will not unpack all of those files anymore.

Son of a bitch.

So I've lost a lot of stuff. I can work on re-building most of it, but a big, time-consuming one is my iPod music! I already transferred my purchases over, that was easy. But how do I get non-purchased music from an iPod back to my computer? All the stuff that took me hours to burn in! You gotta help me, guys! :wallbash:

Thanks!

Hey, thanks for the suggestions!

I was just about to try some of the software suggested in that first link when my Google homepage showed me the following Wired article:

Ta Da! Windows Explorer can do the work for me! So all is okay :)

What timing on the part of Wired! In some ways it's been a pretty piss-poor week and my computer troubles have been the icing on the cake. I appreciate the help, guys :)

I'm guessing you are reffering to the "VIEW HIDDEN FILES" part????

Please clarify if you aren't

Yeah. I always have "view hidden files on", but I forgot that when you re-install XP, it's turned off. So when I tried to explore the iPod and couldn't find the music I just figured Apple had some proprietary file format crap up their sleeves.

I just found the files, copied them to a "real" hard drive, and imported them to iTunes. Easy as pie. You just have to make sure iTunes actually physically copies the files, too, so it can re-name them to something that makes sense.
