View Full Version : Its Guy Fawkes Night
My poor wee dog is terrified :(
If y'all dont know what guy fawkes night is, its a celebration of the dude who tried to blow up the houses of parliament in britain.
People light bonfires and burn 'guys' (effigies of the dude) on them. The biggest part of bonfire night,as its also known as,is the fireworks.
Basically all the shops sell fireworks in the run up to the 5th of november and anyone can buy them.Kids arent suppose be sold them but they are.So theres a constant stream of fireworks going off all night and my dogs terrified.Poor weee guy is terrified and he barks like crazy when the big ones go off and i cant get him to stop.
So I have to sit with him and try and keep him calm and i cant even get to enjoy the displays :(

I hate to admit this. Most of what I know about Guy Fawkes night comes from V for Vendetta. Although History Channel did have some stuff on it included in the Halloween shows.
The burning of 'mini guy' seems a tad odd. Sorry about your dog, but I do like fireworks.

Yeah my dog used to go insane during fireworks and thunder storms.
Guy Fawkes got hung, drawn, then quartered back in the day. What a way to go.
If you've ever heard the phrase "penny for the guy", its something kids say. They make a guy and sit on a corner with it and say "penny for the guy".You supposed to give them money for it.Dunno how that started. They then typically bur it at the bonfire.
I like fire works too its just the dog thing that gets to me.They go off constantly for like 5 hours and then it quietens down a bit.You stil get some going off in the middle of the night though, those ones piss me off.

I also had a dog who would go ballistic whenever there were fireworks or thunder. The story goes that she was caught in a thunderstorm when she was a stray puppy, before my parents adopted her. So every New Year's Eve she'd tear up doorframes when the fireworks began.
Well, in the spirit of Guy Fawkes night, you should blow up Parliament with gunpowder to protest the noise.
Kids arent suppose be sold them but they are.

happy failed revolution day! yay!
do the fireworks still last a month before and after like they did before?
i remember fireworks night, i remember the screaming hedgehogs from the bonfires when they caught light a sound you never forget... ;)
although i have to say the fireworks out hereo nthe forth really are much better htne the ones you get in the uk even peoples personal collection, and in chicago you are not even meant to havethem, hehe which means that on the 4th the whole city is alight with fireworks.... *L*
i do not miss the penny for the guy thatthe scouts asked for as it was no longer a penny but a pound! damn inflation..

Scarry thing about fireworks in Chicago is sometimes it's actually a firearm. They aren't supposed to have those in the town either. :yaya:
Just remembering how my one dog always freaked out on the 4th of July or during a thunderstorm. The one after that though was fine with them. :dunno:
what kind of dogs do you people have?
i have a beagle. she's awesome.
however, thunderstorms and fireworks and loud noises don't seem to bother her.
strangers, yes. being alone (mostly), yes.

Well, that particular dog (Julie) passed away years ago. We don't know her exact breed - she was a mutt and a stray, but we suspect she was a German Shepherd/Collie mix.
The dogs my folks have now are both Golden Retrievers. They couldn't care less about loud noises.

"Remember, remember, the fifth of November
Gunpowder treason and plot
We see no reason
Why Gunpowder treason
Should ever be forgot"
Made famous again recently by the movie "V for Vendetta"
The second verse:
"This is the day they did contrive
To blow up King and Parliament alive
Through God's great mercy they were taken
With a slow fuse and a dark lantern
Holler boys, holler boys,
God Save the Queen
Penny for the Guys"

God Save the Queen
or more accuratly
"god save the [insert monarch in power here]"
they have to change all that crap everytime we get a different sexed monarch, i think they need to neuter all royalty and make them a non denominated sex

Both of mine were Golder Retrievers. One was scared of them and the other was just fine with them. :dunno:

yes... what is worth celebrating however is the way he was caught and tortured, and it is a living example to all those wannabe's out there that in the old days they did not faff around with prison hell no striaght to the nitty gritty torture then if they are not dead hang em draw them ( while still alive do not forget) then quarter them usually the quartering is the killing part obviously... but still it seems there was alot less wrong when it was a swift justice then all these lawyers fighting to get paid these days...
the only downside is if he would have been successful the palace of westminster would not be there now as we know it, and it is a pretty building with lots of history
