Though there's still so much up in the air about the PS3 still, the controller is really one of the hot button issues.

There was an update today, based on Japanese tech site Broadband Watch.

According to the report (http://bb.watch.impress.co.jp/cda/special/15818.html), the controller will have to be paired to the console via the USB cable before play. This pairing process will be required each time the console has been shut down and turned back on, or - given the rough translation - possibly every time the controller has lost power.

It's unlikely that putting the console into standby mode will cause a reconnection requirement, if it's console-related. It's also unlikely that many of those lucky (?) enough to get a launch PS3 are going to want to leave it on, even powered-down, 24/7.

Those wondering about battery life will be happy to note the controller is expected to get about 30 hours of playtime out of one 2.5 hour charge. As the battery isn't replaceable, when it's no longer recharging the controller needs to be replaced or sent for repairs.

Does either option seem especially appealing?

Oh well, it's not like we can't trust Sony's batteries. DOH! (http://gaming-edge.blogspot.com/2006/10/sony-batteries-see-further-recalls.html)

[Edit - since posting this, impress has corrected the original article. It seems that pairing isn't required, that was a "feature" of the early revisions of the console. It may still be required for the initial connection, for Bluetooth's authentication process, but that would likely be it. The controllers? Those are still disposable.]does anyone else see something messed up there ?

looks like every time the controller dies out(battery loses chemical charge) it needs to be "sent for repairs" (but it will take longer then warranty you can bet on that) or buy a new one.

I would not worry about the battery running out, I would be more worried about it catching fire!

Why on earth would they make it so you cannot replace the battery yourself. That is a bad idea.

Why are they changing all the fundamentals of making, releasing and maintaining a console system?? Why the hell isn't everything just the same as PS2 except with better hardware?
Don't mess with a good thing.

I also read an IGN article that said the controller felt like shit.

*Edit*

Compared to Microsoft's uber-comfortable Xbox 360 pad, the SIXAXIS feels cheap, plasticky, uncomfortable and disconcertingly light - almost as if it's going to fly out of your hands during those more extreme gaming moments.

i thought the usb connection to start the system thing had been refuted? also sony is saying now they will replace any controllers that have battery failures, but who knows for how long.

sony isen't a proactive company(doing things before they become a problem) they are a reactive company(doing things after it becomes a problem, and people complain)

probally why sony is falling behind in all of it's markets lately.
