Dropping Vanilla BF2 server

We are at the verge of BF2142 coming out. As we've stated, we will be hosting a BF2142 server. However, we do not have the resources (admins, time, money) to carry 2 BF2 servers, 1 BF2142 server, 1 POE2 server, and a CSS server. So the tough decision that we have been struggling with is which server to drop.

As you saw in the title, the server that's going to be dropped is the Vanilla BF2 server. This will disappoint some of you bc you play exclusively on that server. The decision was not an easy one to make. The reasons why Vanilla was picked includes:

Player base: Infantry server has a niche market for infantry players. Populations is consistently full or near full on the Infantry server. Vanilla population fluctuates even without crashes or disconnects.
Server ranking: Infantry server ranking (10th) much higher than Vanilla (31st).
Stability: Infantry is way more stable. Vanilla server is crashing nitely. Player base goes away nitely with a crash or thru mass disconnects.
Administrative: Vanilla, due to the vehicles, consumes a lot of administrative attention to keep it up to the WiH standards. This does not allow our admins to properly concentrate on the other servers. Infantry, OTOH, sees an occasional tk'er and rarely any griefers.
Gaming trend: We believe that there is a "flock" mentality where players will migrate to whatever the majority of people is playing. We believe that a large majority of the players who were attracted to vehicles in BF2 will migrate to BF2142. Once they leave for 2142, it will be harder to attract and retain players on the vBF2 server.


Before the server goes bye-bye at the end of October, we will organize a final farewell gaming party on the vBF2 server for all the WiH regulars. Stay tuned for that info as it becomes available.

Wow, that is some extremely sad news.. seriously. I was just getting comfy here. It really sucks, as open minded as i am to trying new things(specifically gaming/games/gametypes etc... get ya minds outta the gutter) I have yet to find a reason to play 2142, except for the fact that i dig the people that play around here, but i just dont enjoy the game itself. Infantry only, well.. To eaches own of course. I understand you have to do whats good for the community as a whole and i respect that, but unless i am zapped by the gaming Gods with some strong desire to play 2142 or Infantry only, its going to be a sad day for me when i depart from this new found diamond in the rough(WIH). I am in mourning over here already. Man this just sucks:wallbash: (selfish memememem)lol.

I am sad to see the vBF2 server go away. Lots of good times on that server. While I understand the Owner's decisions on the matter I might point out one thing.

There is going to be alot of fluctuation between people transitioning to BF2142 and then going back to BF2. Either because they want to compare the two or because they don't like one or the other as much. I think a large part of the community is interested in BF2 still and so it might be best to keep 2 BF2142 servers online and 2 BF2 servers online for a bit and drop POE2 until everything settles.

Once it does then you will have clear data on which of the 4 servers is the least occupancy and then you turn that one into the POE2 server again. At very least I know you are keeping the option of switching things around in the future.

that is not a good thing to hear at all. I really don't like the IO server. I only play on it when there are other reg's playing there. the vanilla server has been my home the last weeks.

so, I'm sad to say this, but when the vanilla server goed away, you wont see me on a War is hell server playing anymore. maybe sometimes on the IO...bc I wont be buying bf2142 any soon...maybe after a month or 2.

I still think its kinda wierd that the vanilla server is going away. bc it is the #1 server is has been here before we got a second server. and its the complete game being hosted. now we will only have a few maps to play on. but your servers your decision.

the IO is not my favorite server too! i think its hard to hear that, vanilla go off ! for me and other!! but that´s your server, you can do what you want.

I hate IO... only play because I can't play on Vanilla and even then it's so hard to stay on for more then 2 maps..

Let's face it, 2142 is subpar and not making much of an impression for many people; I seriously doubt that more than half of the current Bf2 players will move to it and spend time on it (meanwhile leaving behind Bf2) for any serious length of time. 2142 = small market. Bf2 = large market. I think this is a big mistake. Please reconsider; wait and see how many people are really going to be playing 2142. I think after a while the crickets will be singing in the 2142 server and community members will have to go elsewhere to get their Bf2 fix (IO is awesome, but its not the real Bf2)... Nothing good will come of this.

Those are your opinions.

We are not burning our BF2 servers, we are just switching one to 2142. WiH has a history of changing to the communities wants.

If after a peroid of time and if 2142 does not live up to the communities need, the owners will make a decision on to continue with it or change to something else.

Personally I hate the IO server, reminds me of 24/7 Karkand, but I agree that a large segment of the BF2 population will migrate to 2142.

While you may see this as a negative to the community, I see it as a way for the comunity to grow.

But, these are just my opinions.

Random thought since your putting up a 2142 server. Will it be a titian or conquest?
For the record, I like the vanilla also. IO is fun and I do enjoy it. However, I like the vechicles. They enable me to move around the map faster and not spend minutes hiking from point A to B. On the plus side I belive IO helps squad play and the battles are a little more intense.

I can't play right now and when I will be able to I got all the running around to look forward too - IO - :thumbsdown: .

My home page is WIH and everytime I launch IE, the POE2 server is empty, ever since it was changed from 64 players to 50. However the vBF2 server is always running and most of the time full.

I hope that if you have to get rid of one, axe the POE2, I love it, but no one ever plays it anymore.

P.S. AF was always full and that got axed.

I hope you reconsider...vBF2 and get rid of the server that sees almost no use or activity all the time.

I've been actually having fun in both servers. Although, It's been easier to fly a jet because a lot of people have been in 2142.

I think this will work its self out in the end. Vbf2 had its run. IO will have its run and maybe just maybe it will turn into vbf2 again. You might see the IO server take a loss in population when 2142 comes out. Thats just it you never know. I liked both servers well. and as far as the community taking a loss on this deal well if you leave due to a server change then yeah anyway. I know for one that i will be playing both 2142 an bf2. got to keep the population up on the servers.

juuhl got the right idea. Those of you who are here froma long time ago, knows that we always watch and adapt. If IO doesn't work out, then we'll flip it to vBF2 again. If that doesn't work, then we'll figure something else out.

The bottom line here is that while it's nice to have 2 2142 servers, 2 bf2 servers, money doesn't grow on trees. The donations what we get covers a portion of our cost quarterly. But the owners are simply at the limits of their resources with these servers.

If you choose to depart WiH, that is your choice. We thank you for making us your home while you were here. We wish you good gaming where ever you end up.

I wouldnt leave WiH. I mean WiH is more than a couple servers. Vehicles matter less when your in a squad playing together as a team.

That is unfortunate to see one of the BF2 servers go, and I agree running from point A to B is a little annoying sometimes. But no one has commented on the server party at the end of the month, might as well make it a good one and an intense battle. I haven't played 2142 yet but I'm looking forward to it with WiH.

If its vanilla then the prospect of having to search for a new home is depressing. It's been a long time since I've server searched. Anybody know where there's a good vanilla server (please PM if you do!)???

With the ranked BF2 servers you are only allowed to have one instance of BF2 and the cost of running the POE/CSS/TS server is half of what a ranked BF2 server costs.

I believe it kinda was, and one of the owners can correct me if I'm incorrect in my assumption.

The server population is the best poll out there. There are several factors: how quickly a server fills up after a crash, if its poplutated all day every day/or just certain times of the day

WIH has hosted EVERY expansion that has come out, and I'm sure will try out most of the good mods. I personally like the Special Forces and Armored Fury expansions over either IO or Vanilla :dunno: And there are several that agree and just as many that disagree. The fact is, the servers didn't stay populated enough to fill our little niche group.

The RANKED servers cost a bundle to run. It is not the same as running a regular Battlefield Desert Combat/Quake 3/Unreal Tournament/CS 1.6/CS:S or ANY OTHER game out there. EA/DICE found a way to capitilize on everyone liking a ranking system....kudos to them :flipoff: But that means server operators can't have as many variations running as they used to.

So that means they have to use server attendance, forum attendance, and many other factors to decide which servers they are going to fund. It sucks, but unfortunately I think it is going to be a fact of life for all online games now (Except hopefully for mods :yaya: )

IO is perfect for me and the most enjoyable, but then again I have always, since day 1, been a ground pounder (support whore) and rarely in a vehicle.

Call me "impure," or whatnot, but I don't really think I'll play BF2 once 2142 releases. Overall, it strikes me as an improvement on the series. I also think the statement that under half the existing BF2 players will switch to 2142 is a gross underestimation. The thing is, those who will be playing 2142 instead of BF2 tend not to be very vocal about it, whereas the people who don't want to 'upgrade' typically use their decision as a platform from which to air grievances about 2142.

Regarding IO, I think it's good clean fun. Not something that I'd play 24/7 necessarily, but it really hits the spot when I'm frustrated by APC spawn campers. In support of the WiH admin's decision to keep IO, I'd say there is more overall demand in the BF2 community for 'niche' IO servers than vanilla (of which there is a strong majority).

In both cases, we'll see what happens.

Wow, what can I say. Though I play IO a lot because my squadmates prefer it, I will always love vanilla more. IO is nothing but a bunch of 5 year olds nade spamming and claymore spamming. There's nothing more pathetic than seeing 2 people meet around a corner, and neither shoots. Both pull out grenades and start throwing and bunny hopping. A team full of medics is unstoppable while a team full of snipers (usually the case) gets raped. Vanilla is so much more exciting and challenging. IO is a ridiculous stat padding server but I guess it will be my BF2 home once vanilla is gone. I like the WiH community and most of the regulars that reside here. I would pay for a WiH server myself to keep vanilla up, if I had the money.

:icon_cry: Man, I for one won't be moving to 2142, after playing the demo, it's not as good a game as bf2(imo). Furthermore, I've spent 90 bucks on the game itself and bought a new video card just to play bf2. This is sad news indeed. Well ea needs more dough i guess. Thank you owners for putting these servers up in the first place and thank you admins for keeping wih a great place to kill some enemies. Heres to hoping no one plays 2142 and the vanilla server comes back someday~!!:yaya:
