Xbox wasn't showing up to TGS empty-handed, nosiree. They've finally stepped up with a couple of interesting, albeit expected, announcements. First up: the Xbox 360 HD DVD drive (http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/09/hands-on-with-the-xbox-360-hd-dvd-drive/) finally has a price and date of launch (http://www.engadget.com/2006/01/04/external-hd-dvd-drive-due-for-xbox-360-this-year/) -- for Japan. The land that forgot the Xbox (http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/07/microsoft-cuts-xbox-360-by-85-in-japan/) are first to have their HD DVD add-on announced, due to hit overseas streets on November 17th for ¥19,800. That's about $170 US, which is not only an awesomely and unexepectedly low price for an HD DVD device (especially when bundled with a Xbox 360 Universal Media Remote), but it's also a good indication that the US version of the device should be around the $200 range when released in the US, as we've been predicting (http://www.engadget.com/2006/08/14/xbox-360-hd-dvd-drive-to-cost-just-200/). Part two: a software update this year will enable 1080p output on the friggin' Xbox 360! Your rig will finally benefit by pushing the full 60 megapixels per second of visuals to your compatible HDTV. Sorry, no HDMI cable yet (or ever?), though, this is only over component and VGA. Users can expect 1080p upscaling immediately on current games and DVDs and native 1080p on compatible HD DVD titles, but Microsoft hasn't yet announced future games that will rock 1080p natively. Watch out Sony, that whole 1080p song and dance (http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/06/playstation-3-launch-delayed-for-europe-and-others/) isn't such a marketing edge for you guys anymore.

P.S. -Just to sate your curiosity, we were chatting with Shane Kim (http://www.engadget.com/2006/05/16/the-engadget-and-joystiq-interview-microsofts-shane-kim/) about this stuff and asked specifically about 360s with an internal HD DVD (http://www.engadget.com/2006/09/13/microsoft-has-internal-hd-dvd-xbox-360-in-the-works/). Microsoft's answer is and continues to be a staunch no. That whole thing about paying only for what you need, etc.

Sounds and looks good. If I ever get an Xbox 360 I may wait to see if this ever gets integrated into it. Otherwise, I may hold off.

Ya would be cool if they'd intergrate it into like a "platinum" package or something, just so you dont have the extra add-on. But at least you get a choice with wether or not you want it. *cough* unlike sony *cough* :D

yea i was about to chime in about this, i was saying it long ago when they announced the HD-DVD drive that MS would just release an "unlock" for the system to open 1080p for video playback(and maby games too, dunno yet about that)

but the biggest thing, is will it change the VGA over to be able to do 1080p, because if that happens, my 360 might be permenently hooked to a monitor instead of a tv.
