View Full Version : Locking Avatars
Is there anyway to lock an avatar that is in use.
I don't know about anyone else, but whan I am scrolling through a thread. It's usually their avatar that quickly lets me know who contributed to the thread.
Also there is that little bit of personal attachment to your avatar.
Just my 2 cents, if its possible I will start a poll and see if the community would like that. If not please feel free to hit me with a cyber shovel.:D

Personally have to agree as I do the same thing Ichi. I first identify the person by their avatar.

 Yeah, but I also agree. Ive used this avatar for a while now, and I would it be cool if I was able to keep it locked and not have someone take my beaver.
I would suggest that in order to be able to lock your avatar, you would have to have been using it for a while, and not something you just chose.

True but I am only talking about the ones that are in use. If you switch to another avatar then that one is now available.
My point is only I am starting to see some people with the same exact avatars.

Yea, that would nice to have under usercp, to be able to lock it,so when you made one or found that perfect one no one else could use it till you changed, and then it would release to community use.
And I,m thinking of stealing your beaver and modifing his shirt, Titran

Now that you mentioned editing, aeromotor, its quite obvious that locking the avatars would at most be a very slight deterrent. Because you would have to save the beaver to your computer to edit it.
Somebody could easily just save the picture of someones avatars, and then load the avatar up using the "browse" feature. Or they could edit it like you suggested.
It may deter them a little, but unless you can take away the right click feature to be able to save, anyone can steal anyones avatar.
The problem isnt people stealing avatars. Its just when someone joins and goes to choose an avatar they see a list that includes everyones. They dont know if they're choosing one that someone made specifically for themselves.

Exactly, it's not someone being malicoius. They jsut don't know and see it available.
This might cause someone to make a bad impression when they join the forum, because someone flames them for steeling someone elses avatar.

Well in my posts I never meant stealing as being malicious. I simply meant they might like an avatar and they want it themselves. While they themselves might not see anything wrong with sharing the same avatar, someone else might be annoyed. Because of that, it still might not help to block avatars
I understand that the reason for blocking the avatars is nothing to do with being mean.

Just use an avatar that isn't currently in the gallery. If you upload one that isn't in there then no one else can use it (I think), I believe that the ones from the old forum got migrated automatically to the new VBulletin system. (correct me if I'm wrong)

good job bringing this up ichix.
i agree.
i see the value in having a nice pool of avatars for people when they come in, just dont want it to be my avatar :)
at least be able to lock the avatar that is in use currently.
What about putting up the min. amount of posts (by a small number) to use wih custom avatars? Give the newbies a chance to see who is using what.
If what multiplex said about it only applying to avatars uploaded before the update is true,i think the simplest way would be for us to compile a list of our avatars that we dont want used by others. Then they could simply be deleted from the site and reuploaded by us thereby making them unavailabe to others.
Personaly i dont really care if someone has the same avatar as me but i suppose thats just because mine is the logo of my football team and not anything i made myself.

I checked up on this and there's no way to lock avatars that have been used. The best you can do is ask the person who's using your custom avatar to stop.

There's no way to just remove the list of available avatars that we all uploaded? Or would it also remove our avatars as well? If that was the case, maybe make everyone host their avatar image @ like imageshack and then delete all uploaded avatars that are hosted on your server. :dunno: Could be way off in my thought process though, just a thought.

I may be mistaken but...
I think there are no new avatars besides new members that upload thier first avatar. I think the current list is from the switch when wih got haxed (suxord btw) cause some of the avatars i see are from that time period like when CR had Bruce Lee as his (well maybe still does?) Mulit you had the marlboro type avatar and its in there, aero or bigninja had the "forever" lesbian hotness, and greentree had the "lost and found" at that time. Maybe im a little crazy for remembering that kind of little stuff, but it sounds kindof logical.
though some have changed like ABs new one. Well maybe if noone is using the one you uploaded first, it will overwrite a new one, hence ABs?
just pondering while at work...

They are, I noticed that when the site first switched. (I was here for the first day) We had a whole bunch of set avatars. At first I thought they were random avatars that you guys chose, but I found a few of our older ones, and then realized they were all ones that exiswted at the time. The database hasnt gotten larger since.

I don't care if they are locked or not, unless someone uses my avatar. Then I'll be mad, and go jump in a cardboard box and cry.
But, yeah, the(no y) avatars in the list are all the old ancient ones that no one except Bob uses anyway.

all i have to do is right click on anyone's avatar, save it to my hdd, then reupload it as a new custom avatar. there isn't a way to lock it and i can't even imagine how you would go about doing that. the software would literally have to compare the picture being uploaded to every picture in use on the website. not the filename, because that could be changed. and even then, all someone would have to do is change one pixel and the picture is different.
interesting idea, but unless you stop people from using custom avatars (which would remove all of the avatars you want to protect) there really wouldn't be a way to go about doing this. also, if you were just using stock avatars, eventually you'd run out because i'm fairly certain there aren't too many.
there are forums larger than this that don't even allow custom avatars (anandtech for instance) so i'm just happy we have that feature. :)
edit: actually, if custom avatars were disabled, and only moderators could "grant" you an avatar, that would probably work. but what a pain for the people who have to do it, and for you if you wanted to change it without a bunch of hassle.

I believe that the reason that this was brought up was because new users were coming to the forums and selecting avatars that had been used by regulars for a long time and had become associated with those avatars.
The reason people were asking about "locking" them was just to keep the honest many honest and make it less difficult for newer users to come in and simply select an avatar used by someone else for a long time. I think everyone knows there's no way to put 100% protection on any images that exist on the internet.

i guess i don't see what the big deal is. everyone's avatar came from somewhere else. even if it's a crop of another image, it was borrowed from somewhere. now if you're an artist and you draw your own avatar and copyright it or something, then i could see. otherwise, it's just a picture beside your name.

It's not a big deal and I don't think anyone has said that it is. It's just that people begin to identify others by their avatars while scrolling quickly down a page so when an avatar that's familiar is used by someone else confusion ensues.

A nice way to settle this avatar stealing is, if you see someone with your avatar or someone with someone else's avatar and you know for a fact whos avatar it orginally is, just pm them and say that it is someones avatar, be cool and get your own.
