Xbox 360 HD-DVD drive to cost £199
With 360 bundles planned rather than pre-Christmas price cut

The Premium Xbox 360 won’t benefit from a price cut this Christmas - but instead a HD-DVD and console package is due, spearheading a marketing drive of console bundles available from November.

Retail sources have indicated to GamesIndustry.biz that Microsoft is currently planning to price the standalone HD-DVD drive at GBP 199 (293 Euro), and to package it with two HD-DVD movies. The sources also suggested that Microsoft will bundle the Premium console and next-generation movie player together for under GBP 400 (589 Euro) – and that the price could even be as low as GBP 375 (552 Euros).

Next-generation movie support is considered a unique selling point of the PlayStation 3, but Microsoft’s HD-DVD bundle could retail around GBP 50 (74 Euro) cheaper than Sony’s machine, which features the rival Blu-ray movie format.

UK distributor Gem is already offering Premium Xbox 360s with a copy of Project Gotham Racing 3 and two wireless controllers for GBP 299.

It’s expected an official Premium bundle will be made available in early November, with a newly released triple-A third-party title included.

Microsoft recently reduced the price of the Xbox 360 Core package, after many retailers had already taken a similar intiative.

With the pressure to compete with Sony over the Christmas market no longer a threat for Europe, Microsoft looks set to capitalise with a range of SKUs to help grow its installed base in the region.

Microsoft did not respond to requests for comment.

i personally dont have a 360 yet as i'm waiting on a mobile phone contract upgrade so i can get a 360 for free, then i can buy the ps3 and/or wii, on/near release.

though even if i had one it would depend on how much use i would get out of it.
and since i have no HD stuff (tv,ect) there would be no really benefit to have one atm, maybe later once i have some HD tech and a use for it.

it is tempting, but since all the ps2 became was a dvd player... why the hell bother?

heres a question:

with the initial release of HD-DVD and Blu-RAY format discs, all I have heard about either were all of the compliance issuse that made them completely not worth getting. Things like having compliant dvd players, monitors, video cards, tv's and so on and so forth. If everything wasnt compliant, then all you got to see was a reduced quality product. That being said, how is the PS3 and 360 going to utilize this HD feature? Does everything have to be compliant in order to see any use out of the PS3 or the HD-DVD kit?

Oh snap, prowler! Good to see you man.

Well I'm not certain I know exactly what you're asking, but I'll give it a shot anyways. The HD-DVD add on is only going to function with hd-dvd movies, not games. Now the blu-ray drive taht's built into the PS3 can play blu-ray movies. I had heard some talk of bluray players not being able to play dvds, but supposedly the hd-dvd players can. So basically you have to have a blu-ray player to watch bd movies and an hd-dvd player to watch hd-dvds.

Now as far as being able to see the benefits, you really won't unless you have a hdtv. And even then, it better be 50 plus inches to really be able to see the difference. You can get an upconverting dvd player that is near HD quality @ 1080i, so some people are refusing to buy either of the formats. And as far as video cards go, I'm not too sure what the requirements are except that it has to be able to support 1920x1080 resolution. But even then the only real reason I'd get one of those is if I was going to make a home theatre pc until you can get hd-dvd or bd drives in your computer.
