I just read about that on CNN. Too bad, he had pretty neat shows. It said that the barb of the stingray actually went through his chest, though I dont know if that means entry and exit, or just pierced and poisoned him.

it kinda makes you wonder, a stingray is about 100x less dangerous then half of the things he's gone after before, yet it is the thing that kills him.

kinda like stunt people that survive missing a pad or get hurt on every 10 stunts, then chokes on a grape and dies.

That's unbelievable. With all the risks he took I think we all kind of suspected something would happen to him someday, but I never would have guessed it would be from a stingray.

Even though I felt he sometimes went to far, his show was pretty entertaining. That genre of television has definitly lost an icon. But the saddest part is that his two little kids have lost their father.:icon_frown:

He was killed while fillming a series called "Ocean's Deadliest" and so death really isn't all that unexpected however I wonder where in the list of Deadliest Ocean Creatures the Stingray was. I think it was simply a twisted work of lady fate. To be pierced by it and then not killed by the poison but for it to freakishly go between his ribs and up into his heart and poke a hole in it while underwater.

Yea bleeding directly from a hole in your heart with poison spreading through your body while suffocating and drowning while underwater.

All that was left was for freakish water spout to hit and then have him eaten by a great white. You have to ask youself how many other things could have happened at the same time?

Poor guy and esspecially poor wife and kids. Hopefully they take it ok.

RIP you crazy Aussie.

I have to say I was amazed he didn't have more serious accidents in his life. I sure we have all seen many occassions on his show that he just plain lucked out and wasn't injured. I remember watching him jump from a moving boat at night to tackle some crock in a river. That guy was a real risk taker.

I really am surprised it was a stingray that killed him though. I know the spike on them is fairly large and can cause nasty infections. I wish there were more details on the death. I'd imagine that if the spike went into his lung, he probably drowned..

Whatever happened though.. RIP.

There are very few trully genuine people on this earth.. people who love what they do, love the world in which they live, and enjoy nothing more than sharing their world with the people around them.

He'll be missed the world over.

This is really sad, I always thought Steve Irwin was such a cool guy, he took alot of risks, but it was because he had such a passion for his work, he really loved the animals he wrestled.

I have a pretty killer Steve Irwin impersonation, to do it now would just be in bad taste :(.

yeah i read about it the night before last at like 3am in the morning on c.n.n. I loved his show. I was tubing stuff of his on youtube and I found this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-Okp5FTKOB4 He was a funny guy. I miss him already. I feel so bad for his kids and wife.

And btw he wasn't filming the documentry at that moment. he was on break due to bad weather from the documentry and was actually filming part of a kids show that he has going with his daughter Bindi from what i read. so that sucks. If the documentry was hadnt been delayed he wouldnt have even been messing with the stingray.

and his death was filmed: http://www.cnn.com/2006/WORLD/asiapcf/09/04/irwin.death/index.html

one of the stories said his manager had said if he was going to go it would probably be in the ocean, because he's agile and really experienced with dealing with wildlife on land, but obviously you lose that in the ocean and he couldn't get out of situations there that he could on land.

i hope that video footage never gets out, just for his kids sake if nothing else.

papasan9

according to the 3 cable shows this morning, he was punctured with the barb, all caught on tape. he pulled the barb out himself then died shortly after.

pulling it out, wow. man. tonight his manager and guy with him when it happenned will be on larry king, cnn.

i dont know if anyone here has been swimming with wild rays. the most common and close setup is off of grand cayman island. there is a sandbar that a bizillion rays gather on and you can pay some money and be boated out and swim with them. i did that several years ago, they ranged in size from 2ft -6ft diameter. they said you will only get speared if you step on one so scoot your feet instead of picking up your feet to walk.

it was kind of scary with the barbs and bodies on and around everyone. it was a very cool experience. weve considered going back to do it, i would never do it again now. partly because once was enough, but shit, speared in the chest. im now more worried about them then the barracuda and barracuda are everywhere.

Papasan - I did some snorkeling around Key West in boyscouts many moons ago. Yeah, they told us to shuffle our feet to avoid being stuck. I only saw one when I was down there though and that was while we were ontop of a bridge. I did see A LOT of barracuda though. I was also lucky enough to get stung by a jellyfish. It was hiding in some weeds I swam though. I never saw it but I sure did feel it. Like someone hitting you with coarse sandpaper. Ouch! My swimming buddy got it worse..

It showed pictures of stingray barbs in a video explaining how stingrays defend themselves. The video was a link from a cnn site i believe.

sir_digalot
09-05-2006, 01:54 PM
But fish venom is heat-sensitive, and relief is almost immediate once the affected area is immersed in near-scalding water, he said.

this is from the cnn link

okay so, hypothetically of course.... you get jabbed by this SOB, in saltwater, so not only is there pain for a 12" serrated barb sticking in you, which has just injected venom, IN SALTY WATER you then have to pour nr scalding water all over it to counter the venom...

holy cripes.... i am NEVER moving to australia EVER!!!!

the more of his old shows i see the more i realize how much he lived his life compared to me. some of the things he did were pretty amazing, and i'm sure he lived his life to the fullest. it's still kinda weird, like, i keep thinking "the croc hunter" is dead, the character, not the actual man.

MajorPayne

I caught an old episode of his on the animal planet today. It was really sad to watch it, he may have seemed like a complete idiot, but his antics were done to draw attention to the real issue at hand, that of wildlife conservation.

You think "man that guy is a moron" but then again your watching it, and thus the point is conveyed, it just took some insane stunts to get people to pay attention to just what this man was trying to tell us.

that's a cool thought jason. i haven't posted in here yet cause truth be told, he is one of my heroes. not because he helped and taught about wildlife, but how enthusiastic he was about his job and how infectious that was to people who worked with him. i have the pleasure of knowing someone that has met him, and she was telling me that the way he was on tv was how he was in life. just full of energy and generally positive to be around. she said you couldn't help but smile and get excited about things he was working on, teaching, or discussing.

how can you not admire someone like that?

a very, very sad misfortune for the world and his family.

Nah man that's actually a darn good question. I'm wonderin' that myself. See, I heard it nicked his heart or got really close to it... either way I'm sure he knew that the barb was poisonous and figured he would rather risk pulling it out then dealing with the poison seeping into his blood pumper. no idea though

"Greer, best known for her feminist book "The Female Eunuch", said Wednesday Irwin was an "embarrassment" and a "self-deluded animal torturer."
Oh yeah but snatch mutilation, thats acceptable!(I understand, thats not the literal backdrop of the book) I'ed like to grudge @#(#$%&*( her one good time, cant stand people like this. Stingrays are no joke, i am the only one of 3 brothers yet to be hit by a ray, My oldest brother is still scarred on his foot, middle brother took a hit in the ankle(now deceased-unrelated to stingray). Best wishes to Irwins Family and may others learn from this as well(Unlikely-but hoping). Oh yeah and by the way, looking closer at the title of this Pitbulls book.. She is not creative or even insightful, she is just sick and twisted.
