I'll assume you're talking about a Navigation system. I use a Garmin StreetPilot C330 in my car. Love it! But if you already know where you're going, a nav system isn't going to be much use to you after its novelty wears off.
Agreed, if you do a lot of driving to unknown places it will be a good thing. As Admin has said once the novelty wears off, its meh.
By the way I have a Garmin 3+, its old b/w.

There's a difference between doing a lot of driving and driving in areas where you have never been or are unfamiliar. If you're driving a lot on routes you already know, the Nav unit is useless.

My brother-in-law has a Magellan <SP??> At least I think that is what it is.
It was freaking awesome. I don't think it missed a turn once. Had a list of interesting sites to go see, locations of gas stations, etc.
If I was ever driving in a city I didn't know, I would HAVE to buy one of these. And I would recommend buying one if you are in a large city at all.
My favorite command was "When possible, please make a LEGAL U-Turn" :slap: :D

My unit calls me "honey". It's just weird that it's a man's voice calling me "honey".

over here the "tom tom" range is proberly the biggest, you can change the voice you can download lots of custom ones too, homer, darthvader, kit(knightrider),ect, ect. aswell as normal ones
have a look around for your model, if the dude calling you honey bugs you.

That's pretty cool feature! I'll have to look around. I think there are map updates and such for my model too.

i have a handheld unit and not a car navigation system. i never use it except when im going someplace new. however, being in the middle of nowhere it is nice for the fishing spots and machine gun shoots in the middle of nowhere on state roads etc.
i prefer garmin out of all the handheld units ive messed with.

I have the same unit as Wihadmin, and I will second its usefullness!
Not only is it very accurate, it also has some neat stuff like: when you choose a business to drive to, it can also give you the phone number of the business, so you can call ahead to reserve a table, etc.
I had a Tom Tom, their newest 900 series thingy. I got it the week it came out. IT NEVER WORKED. It was always about 200 yards off- I mean, YOU would be shown right where you were, at the correct intersection, but its addresses were off. 200 yards can be a big deal in a crowded area.
Tom Tom also had a host of side features that never worked. Its MP3 player worked fine, as long as I never put more than 20-30 songs into its hard drive. More than that and it balked at loading, processing, and sorting them all.
The voices were cool, but they were always off...it would say, "Turn right in 400 yards"...Well, that's four football fields, man. You would clearly be able to see the turn in about 80-100 yards. So if you couldn't see the screen to know exactly which street, you were gonna turn in the wrong place.
Supposedly, all the big GPS makers get their maps from the same place, but I don't think so...Tom-Tom once confused County Road 74 and 72....That's a MILE OFF. A WHOLE MILE OFF. Fortunately, we knew where we were going and were just testing Tom-Tom, but how would you like to be in a strange city and end up a mile away while Tom-Tom cheerily says, "You have reached your destination!".
I could go on and on...the mount didn't work for crap, the computer software never installed correctly, etc.
Go for a Garmin. It's what they use in airplanes. If it's good enough for them....

Hmmm tom tom works great over here, i've loaned one of a mate a few times when i had to go somewhere i did not know, i also liked the 300 Yards warning, when you traveling at 70+mph and have to jump across three lanes, 300 yards i would say is a MIN to do it safe, depending of traffic.
though if it dont work so great where you are, get one that does. sounds like it sucks over there, a MILE you say! i would be pissed if spent that much cash on some thing that sucks

I've got an older Garmin GPS V navagator. It's one of the ones with a B&W screen, but it also works great as a handheld unit. I think I spent around $200 on it a year or two ago.
I don't know if you have a PDA or not, but I know that they make GPS hookups and software for them.
Also, you should probably get a Garmin unit. They simply make the best units out there, and then magellen makes the second best. Forget tom-tom and everything else. Garmin and Magellen have been around the longest.
Overall though, if you're going to a place that you've never been before, it's best to look at a map before going. I usually check out where I'm going on googleearth just so I know what to expect.
The things I like about my Garmin GPS unit are the stats it provides. Being able to see your elevation, current exact speed, average speed, exact time, exact distance traveled, location of the sattellites, which satellites you're locked onto, and how accurate your current lock is. I like those features, cause I'm crazy about numbers. It's pretty neat to know, for instance, that my house is 850 feet above sea level, while where I work is only 750 feet. And also that my speedometer is about 1 or 2 mph above what I'm actually going.
Oh yeah, GPS units keep a track of where you've gone, and you can upload it into your computer and it will show you your average speed over each tiny section of the overall bigger track. So if you ever get a ticket from a cop saying you were going 75 in a 65mph section, you have the GPS track data to prove that you weren't speeding if infact you weren't.

I don't see the use of a GPS unless you are a traveling salesman. Get a freakin compass, look at the stars, grab some nut sack and be a man! DON'T ASK FOR DIRECTIONS!

I don't know, there's just something about knowing your exact location within 15 feet no matter where you may be on the entire planet that appeals to me.
