IGLA/Stringer sites suck, we all know it. It's not fun. A good jet pilot can take out one of these before you can get a shot on him.
But, that doesn't mean we shouldn't try.
IGLA/Stingers only have two missles. But, if you are in a squad with another guy, you both can man separate IGLA/Stinger sites that are near to each other on the map. You can speak with each other and let the other know of incoming jets/choppers. Two good team players can control half a map's airspace. This really helps ground troops a lot. Even if you die a lot, your stinger site will respawn quick and you can be back at it. The jet or chopper has to spend most of his time dealing with you and not bombing friendly. I really love harassing jet pilots. You know that most jet pilots just want to use that jet to bomb and strafe infantry to get as many kills as they can (because they lack ground-pounding skillz). There's nothing better than frustrating a pilot like that and making it very very difficult for him to get his kills. It's even better if they type something like "DAMN you Jester!"
Sometimes even getting a tone on a jet is enough to scare them away from an area and save a lot of lives.
The people who do the best damage in IGLA/Stingers are often ex-pilots. Once you've flown around in an airplane you will have been killed a few times by IGLA/Stinger sites. You learn how they killed you and you can use that when you are in an IGLA/Stinger site.
When using IGLA/Stinger sites against a jet coming head on, go ahead and fire both rockets as soon as you get a lock. You're probably dead anyhow. But most of the time when I am flying toward an AA site, at least one of his rockets hits me, even if I use flares. If a pilot takes damage, he's going to have to fly slow over his runway a few times to get repaired. This makes him useless to his team for a short time. That's great for your team! Also, if you hit him once, chances are another guy in an IGLA/Stinger or another plane can easily finish him off. If we harass their airplanes and choppers with AA, a lot less noobs would fly. Noobs don't like getting killed over and over.
When using IGLA/Stinger sites against a jet moving away from you, wait for him to drop flares first, then fire. Sometimes, if he's smart, he'll afterburn to get distance away from you. If he does that then you will lose your lock. But sometimes they don't know that it's an IGLA/Stinger site that is toning them. So they turn to avoid it. In which case, you got em! But make sure you time your shot so it doesn't reach him while he's still banking. If you can get it to reach him when he's flying straight and has no flares, you're golden.
Also, a lot of it depends on which jet is being flown, and the skill and knowledge of the pilot. Don't give up though!
Many a time when I'm flying my squadmates can hear me complain about an enemy in an IGLA/Stinger site. They really tick me off. Because I'm spending my time trying to avoid them or kill them I'm not able to do my real job which is to provide air superiority over an area of the map where my team is attacking or defending an objective. My job as a pilot is also to take out armor to help ground troops. If I can't do that, then my team is really bad off.
I have a lot of respect for people who man IGLA/Stinger sites. Any time I see a guy camping in one I make sure to read his name and remember. That guy is really taking one for the team. A true team player.
As for Moble AA like Tunguskas, if your commander is smart he'll drop you a supply box so you can stay armed. They don't carry a lot of clips, but most of the time because they have more than 2 missles to fire before a reload they can take out most aircraft.
The same goes for the Phalanx gun on the carrier. If a commander is wise, he'll drop a supply box next to a manned gun. This will provide the gunner with a little extra time while being strafed by jets. It also has the added bonus that you get a few more missles before a reload. You see, when you have a supply box it will supply you with another missle as soon as you fire one. If you fire slow enough you won't run out and won't have to reload. If you fire as fast as you can you still get a couple extra shots having a supply box next to you! That comes in pretty handy. But it's also pretty dangerous, because friendly can be hit by any missles that miss your intendid target.
One of the worst problems in this game is the fact that Jet pilots and Chopper pilots (and gunners) always punish for accidental TK's with runaway AA stingers. To me you have to be a real idiot to punish for that. If that guy is manning an AA then he is helping you WAY more than hurting you. Even if he TK's you on accident a few times, he's still taking out other jets! If the other jets are not on your ass, then you are FREE TO ATTACK GROUND TARGETS... and that's where the real points are!
So why would you ever want to punish a guy for clearing the sky so you can be free to get huge kills? If you punish him he'll stop doing it. Then you'll have enemy jets all over you and you won't have time to attack any ground targets.
Also, if you are being chaced by a jet, you can run to where the manned IGLA/Stinger site is and he can help save your ass!
So, for your own good, do not punish for accidental TK's by runaway stingers!
I could go on and on but I'm going to cut this post short. I don't want to make people read huge posts. (too late) :D
