I bought a really cheap one at wal-mart before the start of the tournament. Costs about $14, and is uncomfortable on my ears, but it works fine, has a mute switch inline, and the headphones are actually an improvement over my equally cheap speakers. (non-surround sound)
By improvement, I mean I can hear footsteps around the corner and stuff like that.

Yes... do yourself a big favor and pick up a headset for 2 reasons.

1.) It sucks for everybody else who hears all of your sounds while you are talking (and if somebody else is talking it will echo terribly).
2.) Sound is much better for yourself.

My mike's a cheapo too. And super old. But it seems to work. I do wish there was a good voice activated one so I could scream out loud while running and shooting. I'm afraid my speaker would keep it open channel though. The lowest level on my 5.1 is crankin from where I sit.

Got this in about ~2001 at Radioshack for about $25 I think it was. Only recently did it(I) break it, stepped on it... nothing a little duct tape couldn't fix.

Headset + Mic > Speakers + Mic
Not only can you hear better, doesn't make any noise...loud gunshots from your room, no echo either...

Hey thanks for info guys, I'll definitely pick one up so I can be part of the fun too lol. I can't wait to ask the cliche question of CS; "Can anyone hear me?" But I'm not a 12 year old kid with a squeaky voice :)

Teamspeak does have voice activation. But it is not allowed on our teamspeak server. The reason is that it picks up every little fart you make. Your girlfriend decides to come in the room and talk about her day at the mall, everyone get to listen in. Voice activation also pick up on your speakers, if you use speakers, and creates an echo loop. The teamspeak admins will kick anyone using voice activation as soon as the echo loop comes on.

So please map the push to talk key for Teamspeak.

bah, you dont need a mic! in fact i like to play with the sound off, and with one hand tied behind my back

you should try it sometime when im on the other team.
in fact, this is such great advice that you should all try it!

but only when im on the opposing team

I got really nice headphones. With simulated surround sound and everything. But thats cause I use them at work too. Sucks when they died on me and I had to buy another pair. :upyours: But it sure is nice hearing everybody's footsteps and being able to determine which weapon is being fired where. :hump:

Logitech has manufactured a headset specifically for gamers. It's sound quality is pretty good but not as good as the fully enclosed headphones. These have a padded ear piece that goes around your ear instead of on top of it. It results in much comfortable (although slightly dumber looking) fit. In any case it around $25 but well worth the money. Comfortable, high quality, specifically for gaming. Available at Best Buy.
